There are so many reasons to be proud to live in Canada. Our cultural diversity, the natural beauty of our landscape, our freedom from oppression and war, and then, of course, there is our wonderfully opinionated and animated population of young Canadians. They are so smart and driven -- they give us hope for the continued bright future of our true north strong and free.

So in celebration of Canada Day we asked the students of Ms. Cooper's grade 4 class at St. Richard School in Mississauga, Ont. to tell us why they are proud to be Canadian. Here's what they told us:

I'm proud to be a Canadian because we can do anything we try. I'm proud to be a Canadian because we're allowed to believe in God.

I am proud to be Canadian because this country is strong, bold and beautiful. Canada is multicultural and accepts immigrants for who they are and accepts their country and colour, sharing its beauty with every country in the world. Canada has very generous people who are willing to give to other countries and Canada is peaceful.

I am proud to be Canadian because I have a lot of friends like Nadine, Madyson, Victoria, Caroline, Kenzia and Taylor!

I am proud to be a Canadian because Canada is a free country. People from all over the world can go to Canada without being judged by their appearance or where they came from. Also, there are great sights to see like Niagara Falls and the CN Tower.

I'm proud to be Canadian because of the politicians, the government, the TV shows and the good prices at the stores that sell food, toys and electronics. Another reason why I like Canada, is the good gas prices. I'm just proud to be Canadian because I am. It's the best!

I hate nationalism. I'm more in to people and their achievements rather than people taking pride in the achievements of other people born on the same solid bit of soil marked out by their usually immoral ancestors. Pride isn't a sin if it's taking pride in one's own achievements. It's sad when it's taking pride in others. I understand respect for a country and what it's achieved, but I don't understand pride in a country to which someone has contributed nothing except birth. This goes for Americans, Canadians, British, Koreans, Japanese, Welsh, Uzbekistanians or anyone else. And kids the world over. They should stirve to achieve something rather than taking pride in something their ancestors have done.

The kids' spirit is lovely. Lets hope they live up to what they're foolishly taking pride in now. Any Canadian (or American etc.) 'proud' of his country's achievements is a fool unless he, himself, is living up to and endeavouring to forward those achievements. I would say this not just on a national level, but also on racial, religious and family levels. If you haven't done it, don't take pride in it.

Take pride in what you do, not in what others did. By all means THANK your predecessors but do not, by any means link, by birth, their achievements to yours by 'taking pride' in them. People as individuals should be responsible and take responsibility for their own actions; not try and gain cache by using the achievements of their ancestors for personal or national gain. Take pride in what you do today, not what your father or some guy born in the same country 250 years ago did.

Achievements of our ancestors (from almost every country) are fantastic, but they are not we ourselves have achieved.

Anyway, this is just a bunch blurbs from little kids who don't know any better. Who cares what they have to say about their country of origin?
Their intellects are not fully formed enough, nor do they have enough life experiences to make intelligent decisions and provide thoughtful insight.
This is just sentamentalist tripe of using kids to tug at heart strings because 'everyone loves children!'
Just like those douchebags using children in the protests- it's a tactic of sentamentality.

Just like if you asked a bunch of kids to spout off how they love jesus, if you got kids spouting off about nationalism and how their country is so great, it makes me want to vomit.
Kids don't know anything. They just regurgitate what they are told by their elders.
This is just some elder/teacher asking kids to write why they love their country and then distributing like it is some noble truth- pure crap!

If on Friday (July 4), I happen to read the same soort of write up about kids loving the U.S., I would not get patriotic and all teary eyed. I would think of it as crap all the same!

Like every country, Canada has some undesirables.

These Canadians are friends in my book. Listen to what the woman says at 4:40. I kind of agree, but my opinion doesn't count. I'm not Canadian.
