I searched around on the boards here at Dave's and didn't see any recent info on this.
I'm a U.S. citizen and am thinking of teaching in Korea for a few years. I have a B.A. in English, six month's experience teaching at a public school in France and am working on an M.A. in TESOL. I'd like to teach at public school in Korea, and most of the info I see online is for Seoul. Are there public school jobs to be had outside of Seoul? Is there a lot of competition for these jobs?
Any help is appreciated.

Is there a lot of competition for these jobs?

Excellent. They all appear to be in the 2.0M range. Is it possible to find one that pays more - say around 2.3M?

| As far as I know, to make anything more than the base you need either a teaching certificate, at least a year experience, and/or an M.A... They decide based on those 3 things and I've been told with P.S. jobs there is little room for negotiation b/c its set by the gov't |

Thank you. It looks like there may be a few schools where I could qualify for 2.1M a month.
Also, how do summer and winter camps fit into all this? Is it possible / common for one to work a public school job and work one or both of the seasonal camps?

You can get higher than 2.1 m.....especially if you get a M.A and/or a TEFL cert.
The Public schools go by a pay scale depending on which area/province/etc. Hell, the EPIK and GEPIK pay scale start around 2.0 and rise imediately if you have a English degree.
Private schools obviously have their own pay rates. |

You will most likely be asked to teach summer and winter camps. Usually for extra pay. You can also pick up extra pay by teaching some overtime/after school classes. |

If you are looking for EPIK out in the boonies then with your completed MA you can come in at a level 2. That's gonna be 2.0 or 2.1 m basic depending on whether it's metropolitan or provincal. Add in the possibility of a 100 000 rural bonus on top of that and 50 000 extra for each school you teach at then you be looking at 2.2-2.35 easily.
Last year when the levels were different I entered at a level 2 with a CELTA and started at 2.4.
From what I hear the rural jobs are getting a lot more applicants. Word of mouth from friends are drawing more to rural areas as they realise that not everything revolves around Seoul. I don't think that means that they'll be more difficult to come by but the better ones will get snapped up quicker. If the government hopes to have NT in all middle schools by 2009 then I'm sure the uptake and hiring can only increase. |

There is also Gangwando EPIK... The provincial office hires directly... You can get extra vacation and there are lots of rural schools where you can get rural allowance...

| I'm finishing up my first year at my hogwan in September and am interested in coming back for a public school job next February. I live in Busan and want to find a job here. Do you have to go through EPIK to secure a public school job outside of Seoul or is it possible to apply directly to school districts? |
