"Get pictures of guys/girls your age that fit this discription and look at them. Tell yourself things like 'if they can do it so can I'"
No. Get pictures of hot chicks 20 years younger than you, and tell yourself things like, "I can have her if I look good enough." |
Seriously, this is a page right out of my book. It may not work for everyone, but the emphasis is on motivation. The "knowing" what to do is easy, but the "doing" is the hard part. We all know what to do.
Find your motivation....and drive it home from the moment you get out of bed in the morning. |

I live a fairly sedentary existence. Next month I will be 55. I am not too motivated but would like to be.
Is it possible at my age to become quite fit?
Can you please give me some step-by-step advice. I would really appreciate it |
Go tree-planting for three months and you will get back into shape right away. It's a great cause and you get to be in the wilderness for months at a time and you are guaranteed of losing any extra weight. |

| Easiest way is to start walking on a regular basis. Once you're used to it, start walking faster. Brisk walk for half an hour every day will help. Listen to MP3s to occupy your mind. |

I suggested this in another similar thread some time ago, and it's still true.
1) Buy a baby cow. Pick it up in your arms twice a day.
2) Repeat for one year. Increase repetitions as your rapidly improving strength and stamina allow.
3) In a year, you are so strong! You can lift a 500 pound heiffer!
In principle this is a good idea. If purchasing a cow is problematic, you can replace the 'cow' part of the equation with something like 'sit-ups' and 'push-ups' and 'burpees.' Doing these tpe of non-gym exercises in the privacy of your own apartment is advantageous for its own reasons as well.
Diet is key as well, of course. Eating veggies and rice, not too much meat, and getting most of your proteins from nuts and fish, you will have the energy to exercise lots.
Hope that helps! And I'm totally serious about the cow too. It worked for me; I curl ol' Betsy two sets every morning and every night. |
Ha ha, trying to pass that off as your own idea.... |

Yeah I was about to ask him if he got the idea from watching the movie or reading the book called Holes. |

Neither, it's from a very famous Greek philosopher. |

| Nah, I stole it off a friend. Turns out the guy was a plagiarist! Clearly I should be more careful who I steal my ideas from. |

Not a Greek philosopher, but a legendary Greek athlete.
From Wikipedia: Milo of Croton
| Quote: |
| Another legend has it that he would train in the off years by carrying a newborn calf on his back every day until the Olympics took place. By the time the events were to take place, he was carrying a four year old cow on his back. He carried the full-grown cow the length of the stadium, then proceeded to kill, roast, and eat it. |
Milo of Croton is legendary as he was one of the first recorded bodybuilder/athletes to apply the overload principle, which is fundamental knowledge for any type of strength building.
And yes, the cow was indeed over 30 months old. |

| Cool. I just heard it from a buddy who passed it off as his own idea. I had no idea the cow trick had such an impressive etymology. |
