Wow!

Great great advice! Thanks a million.

I feel greedy but I have more questions.

Accomodation around Alona Beach seems to be a bit of a mystery. We're looking for something nice...guesthouse resort style that isn't going to break the bank. Any recommendations?

Also, we are planning two nights around the Alona Beach area and two nights near Loboc at Nut's Huts. Should we do Alona Beach first or vice versa?

The order you choose is irrelevant.

Do a simple search for " ALONA " on here. There is TONS of stuff.

Most of the places on the beach are in the $40-60 range with some as low as $25 and the top end at about $150. (Their prices haven't changed but the exchange rates have since the advice was posted in earlier threads).

I like Alona Tropical and Alona Kew on the beach but there are a couple new ones that were going in and a couple more getting upgrades/renovations when I was there last Feb.

In town (Tagbilaran) I like the Bohol tropics resort.

There are cheap pension houses available in the city as well (from $15 per night) that are clean and acceptable.

Good info, thanks...

What's the Bohol nightlife like? I know it isn't known for it, and isn't that big of a deal, just curious...

Random question, but what's the Philippines like regarding 'herbal refreshments'?

1) there is a little bit out on Alona Beach for tourists.
-there is no red-light district to speak of.

2) would you really want to with a slogan on the immigration/customs card that reads, "death to drug traffickers" ? Not a wise choice.

Taglibaran is a hole itself. Not a very nice city but then most cities in the Philippines are not nice. I take it you like the night life. I would not choose to stay on Alona beach since it is just a bunch of resorts crammed together, and you are surrounded by foreigners. I see enough foreigners, white people that is. But if you like that sort of thing they do have some night life on Alona Beach. Bbqs, bars, drinking all night, etc.

As for Taglibaran there is not much night life either. Although if you stay at Bohol Tropics Resort, which is beautiful, there is a disco there that all the locals go to. And as for most discos in the Philippines, most of the girls there are quite receptive to advances from a foreigner, although there mayb be an expectation of payment at the end of the night, unless you propose marriage.

I guess I won't plan to do any trafficking on my vacation. Just wondering if smoking a joint was in the cards...

Very Happy

I guess there is nothing common about common sense.

Let me make it clear for you then.

Can you find some - maybe, especially around tourist holes.
Would I personally take such a risk? Not a hope in hell.
Can you get serious time for simple possession/use = YES.
Philippine jails make Thai jails look like a resort.
Can you bribe your way out of it? Yes, but damn... $2g-5g for a joint is bloody expensive and as a foreigner you do look like a walking dollar sign and early retirement for someone.

If a little herb is what you are looking for, a flight to Amsterdam is about the same cost as a flight to Cebu. There is lots of nightlife, hot chicks and no worries.

Taiwantroll hit it on the head.

To the poster 'whatever', if you are looking for nightlife, DON'T GO TO ALONA BEACH. I went there with my girl at the time, and it was nice for a few days. But like TT says, it is mostly just a whole lot of white people, and that is about it. In addition, not just white people, but predominately German-speaking people, you'll notice most conversation around you is in German, and all of the languages for signs are in German and English first and foremost. There are a number of Scandinavians around as well. But almost all of them are paying for the expensive diving and will sit around eating dinner on the beach before bed so they can get up early the next day. It isn't the kind of place you'll be sitting on the beach with hot babes. It's more like large diving groups will sit around with beer and eating then go to bed early, and wake up early and go diving together. Most of the conversation will be centered around their dives, so you'll have to be into that, if you want to get into the conversations there. If you are with a woman already, you can just do your own thing, and you'll be thankful they are out on their dives and you can enjoy the beaches without hearing German being spoken around you all day.

I agree with TT on Taglibaran as well. It is a dirty traffic-filled little town with a lot of pollution from all the little trikes all over the place. I really think you'd need a much bigger city that gives you a mall (as a sancuary from the Philippines streets) as well as, well, just a bigger place with a lot more options, if you are looking to just have fun in the PI, that is.

Bohol is more for the person who just wants to 'look at stuff' during the daytime, and relax on beach....errr...I should say, go diving a lot. Alona happens to have a beautiful beach, but most people staying there are there for the diving. Some do go just to be on a beautiful beach, but as you sit there gettiing your suntan or whatever, you'll have countless locals trying to get you on a boat tour or diving trip, as they won't really get the concept that your vacation means lying on the beach, and not hiring them as your boat tour guide person.

Many diver areas DO attract poor women looking for some $$ as the divers are just tossing it out there left and right, but Alona isn't one of those places that attracts those women - its really too small and a bit expensive for them to have local areas to live nearby it. Puerto Galera's Sabang on Mindoro does, as well as many of those locations in northern Luzon up and around AC.

Personally though, if you want to just party with Filipinas, and NOT just the prostitute scene, but just partying with them. Try Makati's Greenbelt 3 area. The wealthier and elite go there.

If you just want to meet nice Filipinas anywhere, then you can go just about anywhere. (I'd avoid the go-go bars, unless you specifically want that). But if you are just doing daily things, whatever that might be, you'll also meet countless normal, regular, and very sweet Filipinas everywhere. They are very friendly and good spirited and always interested in the possibility of 'romance', and they have many very romantic illusions. I think they all way watch too many 'Sleepless in Seattle' type movies! Your average Filipina woman really strongly believes in the concept of 'love' which many westerners usually outgrew in Junior High. You'll also notice pretty much every 'boy band' type of song that is popular in the U.S. among the 12-15 year-old female demographic crowd will be the best music in the entire world to the entire adult female population of the Philippines.
