I hope no one minds me bumping this thread to add a link to this KBS page:

bacasper gets credit for posting this on another thread:

The KBS material appears to be pretty accurate, as far as it goes. So they deserve a lot of credit, especially by Korean standards. But I think it helps if you already know the larger context to understand it.

CJD is not caused by BSE, or mad cow disease. vCJD is, presumably, but it is still very rare.

CJD occurs at a rate of 1 per million people, everywhere in the world.

I am uncomfortable with this statement:

Quote:
The Korean government designated vCJD as a legal communicable disease on February 19, 2001.

It makes it sound like it can be transmitted from person to person, like a cold or influenza. It can't. But it is good that Korea started paying attention to the matter that early, before the 2003 scare.

No one in Korea has gotten sick from eating American beef for a variety of reasons. The main one is that there is no mad cow disease outbreak in the U.S. There never has been Two American cows and one Canadian cow out of a herd of 48 million over 15 years is not an outbreak. An no one has gotten vCJD from eating American beef.

I did find the description of vCJD symptoms rather odd:

Quote:
Melancholia, uneasiness, impatience, irritation, belligerence, and other mental disorders.

I can see why so many Koreans are afraid they may have contracted vCJD. Reminds me of when the AIDs symptoms were first announced, and everyone with a bad cold had cold sweats in terror at the thought they might have AIDs.

It's factually correct, but missing any specific facts on America??? Did I just miss that?

You fail.
