This is for people who are visiting Korea with only their passport and don't have their ARC.
Location: Yongsan Station (Line 1) - I'Park Mall. It is connected to the station.
If you can't find your way there, just leave the station through the main exit, go down the huge stairs or the escalator and turn left. You can't miss it, or you can just follow the crowd. If you enter this way, follow the sign that says I'Park Mall, you should see electronics everywhere, not clothes.
Go up to the 8th floor, you'll notice the entire floor is full of SK, KTF, LG Telecom Booths. The one you are looking for is an SK Telecom booth with a "중고" (Joong-go 'used') section. It is located near the back right side once you get up from the escalator. The booth's phone number is (02)2012-1991, a woman named Jung-gyu usually picks up, but she isn't too fluent in English. There is a guy that works there that can speak pretty good English that she hands the phone over to if you start speaking English.
There are used phones from 40,000W to 100,000W+, they are all in very good condition and with English. All phones come with a charger. If for any reason there is anything wrong, they replace it without questions asked. You only need your passport! Of course you can't get a monthly plan, but prepaid is cheap if you don't call and talk constantly.
Next you buy minutes via phone card. It is 10,000W for about 27 minutes and text messages are 30W each- incoming for both is free. When you buy the card, it automatically gets charged to your phone, so you don't actually have a physical card in hand. I charged 20,000W on my cell two months ago and still have 10,900W left. You can check your balance at TWorld or most SK Telecom stores. You can check your general outgoing minutes in your Call Log located in Phone Book.
Since it's a card phone, every three months they text you to go to TWorld or most SK Telecom stores to confirm you are still you, so just bring your passport again and you're set.
This is the most cost efficient and hassle free way of getting a phone in Korea for foreigners. Don't go ordering from websites and places that overcharge you. The booth at I'Park Mall has very friendly people and help you with any problems you may encounter. Also ask for a free screen protector or "Mirror," and they'll get it for you on the spot.
If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me. If you're really lost and don't know what to do, I don't mind going with you on my free time. |
