I stupidly did a private for a company last month. I did the job because I was assured by a foreigner that they paid (how come some of us become recruiting/agency scum?)

Long story short, of course they didn't pay. I am wanting to get retribution no matter what the cost.

The only way I can think of is to turn myself into immigration for every private I have done in my time in Korea. This will get me deported but hey the fireworks should be fun to watch.

Any other suggestions?

Is this not called cutting off your nose to spite your face? You decided to live by the sword and you ended up dying by the sword.

My advice: Accept that it's a cold hard world out there. You were counting your chickens before they hatched and they didn't hatch. Don't throw good money after bad. Cut your losses.

(I'm into cliches today. You'll have to excuse me.)

Yata-boy I need a laugh like putting US beef in their Kimchi or other such ideas, not practical common sense advice.

Although I really believe turning myself in would be great, it will force me to get a haircut and a real job!

You will be deported. Then Immigration (if they even bother) will call the company and ask "Did you hire this guy". And the company will say "No".

And that will be the end of that.

I think you're nuts to turn yourself in.

You got burned... it truly does suck. What you should be doing now is trying to decide whether or not you want to take that chance again.

As for going to immigration... don't bother. Just go about your day. When someone gets ripped off, their first response is retaliation. In the end, they usually wind up exerting more energy to right the wrongs, and it doesn't happen.

Ya-ta-boy said it 100% perfectly, "Don't go throwing good money after bad".

I'm sorry for your (financial) loss, however, I'm sure you'll find a way to make it up.

Cheers

Maybe your pal got paid, and you didn't.

The correct answer here is to get even without exposing yourself to any hardship.

What this requires is some really devious brainstorming. First off, black list them so no one else gets screwed. Next, get the names of the executives involved...

I leave the discussion there for some imaginative repartee from my more devious colleagues.

with all due respect to your bad luck, and consequential suggestion you should suffer some kind of legal action on account of someone else's lack of integrity; what I would suggest is turn THEM in - Shocked

call up immi and give them a heads up on this company, maybe even the foreigner jerk who led you the lie ? Twisted Evil

then sit back and watch the fun - Cool

Better get a new job if you need money or just keep taking risks if you don't have documents or can't afford to go home and get them, assuming you have a bachelors degree, clean enough CBC, and are HIV negative. Getting deported is only going to make it worse as they're going to want you to pay big money for an immediate last minute flight and if you don't have it then your country's diplomatic mission will call home requesting money from relatives for you to repatriate. If no monies were available in this case, then they'd give you a repatriation loan and then you'd be high and dry at home with nothing, assuming you had nothing or no one there to sort you out. I understand this is how it would be for Americans in such a situation. Don't get in trouble and get banned from Korea by Korean immigration should you want to come back for a legitimate job that pays. I've no 1st hand experience with this and hope to never have, but I read a lot over the years.

Cut your losses and get a new job. Why give up? Blacklist the company you worked for if you like.

Just tell them that you knew they were shady, and so taught them worthless, wrong, and useless English...then run away laughing madly.

Send them a brick through the window, then another one the next day. On the 3rd day, follow the boss home and throw bricks through his windows. You won't get your money but that'll cost em.

Completely ignore this advice if they have your picture or contact details. Unless you really want to turn yourself in, at least this way you'll have actually done something.

Actually, I'm inclined to disagree with Ya-ta: a rolling stone gathers no moss!

It's a dog-eat-dog world, so I say either fish, or cut bait. Shit or get off the pot.

I know lots of people would love to see you go out with a bang!

Okay, now seriously, immigration goes after illegal teaching organizations. The fines for them are a few million won (I just read that on the new immi website...I'll dig it up if anyone really wants to see). You have to decide just how badly you want to see a little (from a corporate standpoint) fine imposed. Or an even smaller bribe ("you give me 2 million and this problem goes away"). I think the bottom line is that this is going to affect you more than them.

But it certainly will be an adventure. If you do turn yourself in, please post details of what happened. I'm sure we'd all like to know how it goes.
