The Colombian authorities say they have rescued Ingrid Betancourt and three Americans held by rebels in Colombia.

Ms Betancourt, a French-Colombian politician, has been held for more than six years by the rebel Farc group and is said to be in very poor health.

She is the group's highest-profile hostage and the French government has made securing her release a priority.

The Farc group has been fighting to overthrow the Colombian government for more than 40 years.

Colombian Defence Minister Juan Manuel Santos said no-one had been hurt in Wednesday's operation in the southern province of Guaviare and that the hostages were in relatively good health.

Ms Betancourt's son, Lorenzo Delloye-Betancourt, told reporters in Paris that her release was "the most beautiful news of my life" and that it had filled him with "an indescribable joy".

She was a hostage since 2002. Looks like Hugo's help won't be needed.

Colombia backs Chavez Farc call

Colombia's defence minister has welcomed a call by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez for Farc rebels to end their four-decade struggle.

Mr Chavez, whom Colombia has accused of financing Farc, had earlier said the group was "out of step" and called on them to release all their hostages.

Colombian Defence Minister Juan Manuel Santos welcomed the comments as long as they were "translated into action"

The US described Mr Chavez's statements as "good words".

"We would encourage Venezuela to follow those good words with concrete actions," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

Or this help?

Chavez: FARC to End Armed Struggle

(CARACAS, Venezuela)President Hugo Chavez on Sunday urged Colombian rebels to lay down their weapons, unilaterally free dozens of hostages and end a decades-long armed struggle.

Chavez sent the uncharacteristic message to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, saying their ongoing efforts to overthrow Colombia's democratically elected government were unjustified.

"The guerrilla war is history," Chavez said during his weekly television and radio program." At this moment in Latin America, an armed guerrilla movement is out of place."

Such declarations were unexpected from Chavez, who has long been accused of giving the rebels refuge. A self-described socialist, he called on world governments to remove the FARC from terrorist lists earlier this year, suggesting the group is in fact a legitimate insurgency.

CARACAS, Venezuela President Hugo Chvez agreed Saturday night to help Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, a seasoned diplomat, try to win the release of three American military contractors held by Colombias largest rebel group, Mr. Richardson said.

Regarding your naivete above:

Though, Chavez has been cooperative, with terrorist groups:

Members of hezballah and al-qaeda are in Venezuela now.

Quote:

From the start of President Chavez's government, terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah, Hamas and al-Qaeda have used Venezuela as their bridge to other Latin American countries since Venezuela is an allied government.

At this very moment, a group of Iraqi activists from the al-Qaeda terrorist organization are touring Caracas and Venezuela. They are Mohammed Adnan Yasin Al Janabi, born in Baghdad, Iraq; Falah Amin Taha, born in Baghdad, Iraq; Muhi Alwan Mohammed Al Qaisi, born in Wassit, Iraq.

So, yeah. Hugo's help isn't needed. Thanks for playing.

Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos said military intelligence agents infiltrated the guerrilla ranks and led the local commander in charge of the hostages, alias Cesar, to believe they were going to take them to Alfonso Cano, the guerrillas' supreme leader, to discuss a possible hostage swap.

The hostages, who had been divided in three groups, were taken to a rendezvous with two disguised MI-17 helicopters piloted by Colombian military agents one on the ground, the other hovering above. The choppers were painted white, without insignias.

Betancourt said her hands and feet were bound, which she called "humiliating."

At first she thought the pilots a crew of four with nine "assistants" dressed in white were from a relief organization. Then she saw their Che Guevara shirts and assumed they were rebels.

Haha. The military put on Che shirts to gain the terrorists trust.

She put it best:

"They were dressed like clowns".

his change of policy wasn't due to the Colombian gov't capturing a computer of one of the FARC leaders now is it? A computer that documented financial ties between FARC and Chavez? Nope, Chavez is just noble and wise.
