Hello everyone, I'm currently interviewing with two Foreign language high schools, and I was curious how these guys are different from regular hakwons. they are promising better pay and hours, but can I trust them? where can I go to hear some feeback about them. the two schools specifically are:
Han Young Foreign Language High School
166 Sangildong Kangdonggu, Seoul, South Korea
and
Daeil Foreign Language High School
unsure of the address.
ANY information would be greatly appreciated. |

I never heard of the first one you mentioned, they must be new. The second one you mentioned is in the top 5 of foreign language high schools in the country. If you do a search on this forum you might turn something up as it has been mentioned before over the years.
IMO Daeil will have extra type classes such as AP available where you can make some good overtime, so if their other renumeration is good, you might want to consider that. |

Having worked at foreign language high school myself for the past four months, I can say that it has been far better than any hagwon I've ever worked for. You'll have the benefits already mentioned, but you'll also teach (generally) fantastic, motivated, and talented students in a professional working environment with (most likely) helpful and competent coworkers. If they hire you (I don't how competitive hiring is at those schools, but I'd imagine you're going up against at least a dozen others for the job), I think you'll have a great year teaching.
PM me if you have more questions. |

I taught at MyungDuk Foreign Language High School from 1994-2002. It was great. The Korean teachers are friendly and helpful and the administration was very kind. At the beginning of the Asian Economic Crisis in 1998 the principal gave the foreign teachers a bonus becuase he knew that the exchange rate had gone to hell.
The foreign teachers were free to participate or not participate in all social activities. I played football with the teachers on Wednesdays, of course drank like a fish, passed out in their houses and went on camping trips.
I would've stayed there forever but my wife wanted to move the the US. But even after I came back to Korea, I maintained a good relationship with that school and frequently go out with them and do some thrashing.
That's just the staff. You also develop a close relationship with the students because they are in the school for upwards of 14 hours. I still to this day get phone calls and emails from former students who let me know what they're up to. About two weeks ago, I went to see a former student's baby.
All in all, FLHS eacher is a good job and it doesn't hurt your resume. In addition, if your thinking about marrying a Korean gal, FLHS teacher sounds alot more impressive than hagwon teacher in the eyes of the prospective in-laws. |

Would you recommend applying to the schools directly? Or do they usually work through a recruiter?

My former FLHS advertised on Dave's. I saw Kimpo FLHS advertise on here back in jan/feb too. You could always apply directly as well. |
