I'm having a 4th of July party in my advanced class tomorrow. Basically we're going to learn some about independence day, watch a popeye cartoon, eat some American-ish food, and play some American games.

Here's where I need help . . .

I need easy and relatively inexpensive American-ish food. Kind of stuff you might find at a 4th of July BBQ would be ideal. Right now I am doing chips and salsa, watermelon, and maybe some donut holes from Dunkin donuts. What else could I do? I don't have access to cooking facilities or even a refrigerator. All supplies much be able to be purchased from Lotte Mart . . .

I need American-style games for the playground! Right now I can only think of Red Rover, Duck-duck Goose, and Murder. What are some other good ones?

Thanks in advance!

I actually had real American style BBQ chicken (tangy BBQ sauce) at a orange Korean restaurant that was called, "BBQ," and was an last year in Changwon in a dong with no foreigners. It's weird how it appears nothing is present and then there it is in out of the way places to be discovered by accident. I was with a Korean friend and he was surprised, he didn't like it, and said this is unusual of Korea so it's possible to get something like that.

If you have a Korean friend who can help you tonight in finding American style anything like I mentioned, then that's a good idea. Of course, me and a Korean friend stumbled on this one by accident. You can get something tonight and maybe use the schools microwave to heat it up tomorrow.

Wow no cooking appliances...not even a grill? Hmmm.

Food
  • Potato and Macaroni salad?
  • Big tub of JELLO for the kids?
  • Tacos (or Taco salad)
  • A lot of fruit

Games
  • Hide n' Seek
  • Capture the flag (everyone has a flag tucked in and kids have to grab each others flag without losing their own)
  • 4 Square (need a ball, draw 4 square with chalk)
  • Dodgeball (use Nerf ball)
  • Jump rope games
  • Hop scotch

Nothing says "USA" like some tacos and salsa! Maybe you should get some bratwurst while you're at it. Throw in a few beans-on-toast as well.

Someone mentioned dodge ball. Be sure to use something hard, unless you are trying to show the pussification of the West.

"Capture the flag (everyone has a flag tucked in and kids have to grab each others flag without losing their own) "

That's different than how we played it. You would get 2 teams, each team would hide their flag somewhere on their side. Then you would have to get the other team's flag without being tagged on their side. We also had a jail area where people captured after being tagged would go to. Just like the flag, but if you reached the jail without getting tagged, then everyone in the jail area could be released and go back to their side.

We played it on a big field with trees and summer camp cabin like areas. It was a lot of fun.

Beer, pizza, football, and strippers! Problem solved.

On a slightly more serious note... "Horseshoes."

Thanks for the help guys. I think I've decided on the following . . .

Food:
-Watermelon
-Chips and salsa (whoever said this isn't American clearly hasn't been to America)
-Peanut butter and jelly (this is genius, I can't believe I didn't think of it)

Games:
-Duck duck goose
-Red Rover
-What time is it Mr. Wolf
-Capture the flag
-Freeze tag

thanks again!

And what is this Fourth of July party about?

Certainly not freedom, or liberty. How an American can party when its government is conducting an illegal war in Iraq, torturing, disregarding habeas corpus, planning another illegal war in Iran, debasing the dollar, stripping Americans of every right they used to have and basically doing what ever the f*ck they want, American will be damn, is quite beyond me.

Should be having a funeral memorial.

Whoa there dot-edu guy. I can't wait to celebrate the birth of my glorious nation. Sure America has its flaws, but I am going to shock and awe myself into oblivion tomorrow with a case of Sierra Nevada alongside my friends and family. All the shit you mentioned sucks, but life isn't about bitching and being pissed off all the time. Life is about surrounding yourself with loved ones while eating, drinking, and laughing warm summer nights away.

Ol' Abe: My fellow Americans, I hearby declare the last Thursday in November a day of national thanksgiving.

Chubby Old Bald Guy: Hey, Abe! You can't do that. We're in the middle of a civil war. Hundreds of thousands are dead. It's the worst crisis in our history. It wouldn't be right to have a national day of thanksgiving.

Ol' Abe: You look a lot like Ben Franklin, so why don't you go fly a kite.
