I've got a decent spec desktop circa 2002 with a bad copy of XP. I'm thinking of switching to LINUX. Anybody else try this, what were your experiences?

I'd do a search. This has been discussed to death!! My experience was great...used it for years until i just switched to OSX86.

I've been using Linux for two years, mainly Ubuntu. I would not recommend the newest release of Ubuntu (unstable). My ex girlfriend used Mandriva and she really enjoyed it. There's so many varieties to choose from for Linux as well.

Aye, there are at least two huge threads about linux and practically ALL the pros and cons. The most recent one is probably only a page or two back.

Long story short, try a couple live cds and see if you like it. Mandriva and openSUSE would be the first two I'd try. A case could be made for Fedora or a few others as well, but don't mess with any new/experimental distros if you're new to linux.

I've tried various forms on linux throughout my life. Slackware, ubuntu, debian etc, and I was pretty impressed with Ubuntu. However, I never really kept linux on my computers because I kept getting annoyed by some dependencies etc, and having to read a lot of documentation to add support for things. I hate windows tho, so i bought a mac. OS X seems perfect for me so far.

Actually, I am not as hardcore anti-Linux as I seem. I just want to water-down the Kool-Aid a bit. (I reached my hyphenated word limit.)

Open source has a place in computing and when a distro finally gets it all together, I will be in there. Heck, Firefox and VLC came from the open source community, and I swear by both. Even you Jay, have written a couple of useful little proggies, and that certainly keeps with the spirit of the whole thing.

As for how often certain topics appear here, well, it may be a testament to how often I read Dave's tech forum. I have a rough idea of when the last Linux war was fought; enough to know that there isn't much more to say about it for at least a few months, until something actually changes significantly.

The OP posted a few new topics within a short time frame and they were all of the same trolling nature. (Asus Eee PC, for example) People just looking for a rise, I suppose.

Linux can be hit or miss in some categories.

1) Hardware support. Most hardware can be used under Linux, some can't. I've had so many headaches trying to get webcams to work with both Ubuntu and openSUSE.

2) Windows I prefer for burning cd and dvds. The programs under Linux are alright, but not as simple or effective as the programs available on a Windows system.

Linux is a good operating system to use and learn. I do enjoy it. It just needs to make some more improvements to gain more popularity among computer users.
