Hi
I worked in Korea for about 2 and half years up until last November when I came back to England
I'm now looking to get my CELTA, but I messed up with my money, and I don't have enough savings to do a course realistically. Now the best plan I can think of, would be to do another year in Korea, and then I would have the savings to get a teaching qualification, and be a 'proper' teacher
The problem is that I really don't want to go back to Korea. I don't like Koreans, I don't like the country, and also I was with a girl who I met out there for 2 years and I came back because we split up, so that wouldn't help either......
Is there anywhere else where I can save money quickly? Is it possible in China?
any advice appreciated  |

| By the sound of your post, you probably should not return to Korea. Living somewhere you dislike just for money is a drag. Try somewhere else. Money may not be great, but if ya really want to save I imagine you will. |

If you take a country job, they pay well and you won't see a good looking Korean woman in sight. You'll be able to save up some money. China will not pay you well. It's only good for people who want a short term cultural experience.

thanks for the advice
Taiwan doesn't appeal to me at all.
Japan does, but from my (limited) research it seems like it takes years to earn enough to save.... |

For good money, you could look at UAE or Dubai. Good money there, but heard it is even more cutthroat than Korea for the ESL industry. I know that the Celta course is offered in Thailand as well as a few other places, but I imagine it is better in the "Land of the Angles." My friend took it there many years ago and said it was very challenging but extremely worthwhile. Not appreciated here at all though. Still, it will improve your teaching skills, and open doors for better positions in desirable locations or institutions.
If you did take it eleswhere, it would at least be cheaper to do so, save on airfare going back to England. If you can swing saving for a year than organize one month for the course wherever you are (visa, accommodation, etc.), it might be worth your while. Open up your options. |

I presume you have a degree already.
Why don't you look into a PGCE or a Higher Education Diploma? You are in the UK now and PGCE clearing will be soon. |

I am definetely going to do the CELTA course, a cambridge or trinity one I enjoy teaching and I think I will be doing it for the next 10 years at least (unless I get a record deal:D)
But I just can't afford the money to pay for a course, and then everything else that amounts to 2 months of supporting yourself. I am in England at the moment and I have too many distractions, I save about 50 pounds a month, which gets me onto a course in 2012 or something |

Again why? What is the point in doing a CELTA course in the UK. CELTA isn't going to pay your bills, CELTA isn't going to get you anywhere else - really isn't. I have one it doesn't make a bit of difference to my life other than having shown me a different method of delivering lessons. 99% of it is a waste in the public school system in Korea.
You are wasting your time wanting to do one now.
If money is the issue then you need to get a job that allows you to save more than 50quid or get back out to Korea/Taiwan and slog out the ESL game for a year. If you reallly want to do a CELTA after that then go to Thailand and do the one that IH has to offer.
Living the ESL dream would be a lot easier with a real certificate in education. |

I've read about those ESL-type courses where you go & do them for free basically (up front) & then pay it back by working in one of their programs for a while. Don't think it was the CELTA though. But if you're desperate you might want to look into it. |
