|
|
| So I just bought a Samsung Notebook out of haste because I needed a replacement computer. The windows is in Hangeul and is driving me up a wall as far as installation of programs and tryng to operate the thing. Does anyone know where I could get a pirated copy of Windows Vista Premium or atleast Basic in Busan? Prices would be appreciated. |

Probably best in the tech forum....
Have you tried a torrent? Check out the Piratebay or mininover... |

Korean Vista has been a nightmare for me. Nvidia came out with new drivers the other day and I'm afraid to download them because of the Korean language issue.
Tons of bugs in Korean Vista even with Service Pack 1 out. You're probably more likely to get a pirated XP than a Vista, though I personally don't know. About 150 bucks from newegg.com for a legit version. |

pick your favorite torrent site and download the version you want.
XP-pro SP3, VISTA - home, business, ultimate, 32 or 64 bit flavors. |

I wrote a while ago about changing a Korean version of Vista on my laptop to an English version. Things seemed pretty grim until I found this program at this website:
Vistalizator from www.froggie.sk/
I now have menus & pop ups that I can actually read - all in English.
It was very easy to do, which is good for computer-challenged people like myself, and the author of the program answered my emails within hours which was a nice bonus. Very helpful he was too.
Thought I'd share in case there are others in the same boat. |
I posted this in the tech forum a while back. Since installing this program my (originally) Korean version of Vista has been 100% English with no dramas whatsoever. Highly recommended. |

I'm in the US leaving for Korea in August.
1.) So if I buy a laptop in Korea, It'll be difficult finding an English Version OS?
2.) Should I buy my laptop in Korea or the U.S.? Are Samsung laptops super cheap over there? |

| It depends. Compare prices and exchange rates (via internet, like danawa.com ). There are alot of variables. But in general Samsung products don't seem to be that much cheaper, and sometimes even more expensive here in Korea. |

Yeah, I don't understand that. Why are Korean electronics more expensive in Korea than in the U.S.?
When my parents moved there for a few years, they wanted to buy their huge flat screen in the U.S. and ship it to Korea 'cause it would be cheaper.
Is it possible that we're not appropriately comparing similar models. I.E. Samsung electronics in Korea "seem" more expensive 'cause the Korean product is more advanced than the American version. 'Cause I know we don't get the latest Samsung phones out here. |

No, they are more expensive here. Samsung is, in general. Same with most Korean cars.
What happens is they tax the heck out of imports so they can keep local prices high and profit more. Try buying a Sony LCD television, or a Panasonic. Brands seen as too much competition are forced to price high, or have difficulties operating here. It's Korean protectionism. |

If I buy big ticket items in the US to bring to Korea (e.g. computer, camera), will they try to tax them as an import? I read somewhere they do that with cars.
Also, anybody have experience buying a phone in the U.S., unlocking it, and then using the SIM card from Korea? Do they even use SIM cards and/or the same SIM card technology for that idea to work? |

This. just. isn't. true.
Vista SP2 is basically Windows 7, with a few GUI changes. Yes, SP2.
Smaller memory footprint aside (and that matters with 4+GB?), benchmarks will show that they are equals.
Marketing and a few GUI changes sells a re-wrapped Vista.
Only idiots (with a fanatical zeal that could only be rivaled by Macheads and Linuts) and Koreans still use XP. |
