Any predictions? Eventually the beef thing must end. They will soon need something else to fill the void. What could it be? Maybe something anti-China? Well the Olympics are soon. We'll see.

Anti China would be nice. On the train the other day, there was new anti-beef posters stuck on the windows and some guy giving a lecture / speech to the commuters.

Lee Myung Bak impeachment proceedings? Very Happy

Trucker, transportation strike.

A magnification of bird flu cases.

An increase in bed bug infestations blamed on foreigners who bring them over unknowingly.

A mini-depression caused by oil, food prices and uncertaintly in lending markets. People jump out of windows, etc. Dollar plummets.

I don't understand why the anti-China protesters care so much about Tibet and not Taiwan. There is no evidence whatsoever that if Tibet had independence that it would be any freer than the way it is under China now. My bet is that it would be a dictatorship just like China or worse.

There IS a clear dividing line between the freedom of China and Taiwan though, yet nobody has the balls to speak up for poor Taiwan. Leftists probably wouldn't be on board with supporting Taiwan since it is a capitalist success and is pro-Western.

Chinese people seem to think little of Taiwan for some reason.. I remember having a conversation with a Chinese girl regarding conflicts and wars, and she said we'll be fine so long as Taiwan doesn't mess with us (implying not that they are a problem to China, but that China would obliterate them) which I was a little surprised about.

There could well be something to this one. The Chosun Ilbo has called the government 'incompetent and irresponsible' twice in two days, and they are the conservative newspaper. I won't say the writing is on the wall already, but...

There will be some scandal during the Olympics that involves a Korean athlete. It will involve some perceived anti Korean cheating by the judges. Sports judges always cheat Korea because it is a small and powerless country compared to the USA.

The next big thing in Korea will be "gochu-jang basted sweet potatoes and pickles with a kiwi salad with ketchup, mayonaise and mustard." Count on it.

I think the next big thing will be actually ending the "American military occupation" in Korea. It's interesting that when the tank killed those two kids, the entire country wanted the US out of Korea. Then North Korea started up its nuclear program and there was talks of GW having a plan to return control of the Korean Military back to the Korean govt, and reducing the number of US troops in Korea..and then there were protests against that. As the US military resources get stretched thin, and the NK "nuclear threat" (if there ever was one) winding down, i wonder if GW will start siphoning off troops to go to Iraq and Afganistan.

Would I be wrong in saying that one of the reasons Koreans don't speak out so vociferously (I know I know, I can't get the right word and I'm hungover, gimme a break) about Taiwan is that see Taiwna as a similar country to them (small nation, Asian economic tiger aligned with the US) and as a competitor....?

I think also part of it has to do with how Tibet is viewed in most of the world as being the severely oppressed and victimized pacifists, the Dhali Llama certainly not withstanding. Taiwan is certainly a hot button issue even if it doesn't get as much global stage time, but it's a lot harder to paint them as a victim considering their GDP dwarfs that of Tibet.

In 1992 Korea made the decision to recognise the Chinese government in Beijing, not Taipei. The result was that China became Korea's largest trading partner. Prior to that political support for Taiwan had been very strong, but economics eventually dictated otherwise. After the Maoist Revolution there were thousands of Chinese exiles living in Korea who were recognised as Taiwanese citizens. However these have since been assimilated into Korea or have moved to Taiwan. There legacy can be seen in a few still existing Chinese schools in Korea that are based on the Taiwanese curriculum.
