| 4870 stomps the 9800 though. You should be comparing it to the 260. And if prices stay at what they just dropped to I'd go with a dual 8800GT setup. |

Right.
The 4870 ($300) is comparable to the GTX260 ($450....soon to be $400).
The 4850 ($200) is comparable to the 9800GTX ($200-$230).
A dual 8800GT setup would be very tempting at those new prices. If two 8800GT's 512mb can be had for as little as $300!................ That's tempting indeed. But, of course, you need an SLI-ready motherboard and a pretty hefty PSU.
Here's a link showing just how powerful two 8800GT's can be....

They beat the GTX280 in Crysis!! By 6fps!
Increasingly, especially with ATI, multi-GPU set-up's seem to be the way to go. I know that the next motherboard I buy will definitely have two PCIe-2.0-X16 slots.
I'm still a little put off with the teething problems in the drivers of Crossfire/SLI but those complaints are becoming less common.
Edit: A quick check on Danawa shows that these exciting new price drops only exist outside Korea!!
Two decent 8800GT's will still cost an average of 440,000won in Korea. $422!!! |
