We were told today that we have to work Korean Independence Day due to summer intensive, and that we'll be given a day off in lieu at some point. I asked "when" and was told "don't worry about it". I then suggested that, since it affects everyone, they should simply close the school for one day after summer intensive. Once again, I was told "don't worry about it. we'll sort it out later".

This sounds fishy (not to mention illegal) to me. Should we fight them on it. We haven't been screwed on pay or vacation so far. If we fight, it'll cause massive disruption, and they'll think we're a cunch of bunts.

I just don't like being TOLD that I have to work and national holiday. According to our contracts, we should have been asked first.

i think that you should definately make a stink about it... especially since it goes against your contract... they always stick to the terms of the contract, so why shouldn't they stick to this particular part? and they didn't even ask you, they told you... lame...

I would demand a written promise of when( an exact date) your extra day off would be and best that it was signed by the school too. If they provided that I would probably work on that day. Also if they failed to give the extra day off, have it worked out so you would get monetary compensation. If they fail to do any of this, then tell me that it is a national holiday and you will not work it.

Without such a WRITTEN and SIGNED addendum to your contract, specifying exacly when this supposed in-lieu day off is going to take lace, I would not work the holiday.

If they are not willing to promise in writing when I get the day off, then I will take the day off that is guaranteed by law.

At the last hagwon I worked at, we had intensive courses in January and they wanted us to work on a Saturday because for some bizarre reason the public school had changed its schedule and was starting early (which I found inexplicable, that would never happen in the States as schedules for public schools are well established months in advance).

Anyway, I simply said no, my contract stipulates I don't work weekends. I had a great relationship with my boss, btw, but he said it was "for the children". I refused, saying rules are rules (I was busy that weekend and had plans).

So they relented. It happened to be my last month of my contract and I did get my full severance pay and parted amicably.
