So my friend who is visiting is really homesick, but since I never eat western food (even in the states) I don't know where to go to get it. Any suggestions, we're in seongbuk-gu but theres nothing up here besides fried chicken. I know it wont be cheap, but something tasty I hope.

What do you or your friend consider western food?

I don't know, he said he likes mashed potatoes and roast beef, and he's from ohio, so really plain american food I guess.

Are there any chain restaurants where you live (TGIF, Uno's, Outback)? If not, it might require a short trip by bus or subway. Granted they are overpriced and not very good, but he/she might be able to find something in that respect. Good luck!

Tell him to expand his tastes or head home.

Seriously, who can't live without mashed potatoes?

nice.

I tried making mashed potatoes in korea, but it kinda came out a bit too starchy.

but its easy to make western food. Might be a tad expensive for things like roast tenderloin, but things like pizza can be done under 10k won

IF you want to get your mashed potatoes so they aren't too starchy, just soak them in water for 45 minutes. Then do your thing.

Not to sound like an ass, but the OPs friend isn't the only one who can't live without a home staple when abroad.

I have yet to see the Korean who can survive without Kimchi or Jochujang while abroad.

We all have our vice, guess that guy's is mashed potatoes. The funny thing is they are easy to make at home...while Kimchi is not so easy to procure while outside the Hermit Kingdom.

Just what I had for my Sunday dinner today. Very Happy The good news for your friend is that you do NOT need an oven. Go to AllRecipes.com and type in Italian Roast Beef. It's made in a pan on top of the stove.

Quite tasty...and I'll be having Hot Roast Beef Sandwiches for lunch all week. Very Happy Very Happy

I plan to cook exactly that, but not today. Plus hes visiting, I'm the one living here and I eat korean food every day. Its different when you're here for just a few weeks, then having korean food every day makes you a bit sick.
