My best friend plans to sell his d300 after he gets back from Japan in order to upgrade. I think he will be back in the first few days of August. I don't what price he is hoping for but if your offer seems reasonable to him I am willing to put you in touch. Maybe that isn't soon enough. Just thought I would mention it. PM me if you are interested.

Nikon just announced the D700. The D300 is expected to fall into the 1200 price range. A new one in a month will cost the same or less than what a used one costs now.

I agree that they are going to fall in price but I would be surprised if they dropped quite as much as you just mentioned. I think they will become $100-200 cheaper. That would still be a couple hundred dollars more than the previous poster mentioned but I am sure the price will drop as soon as the d700's become widely available.

hey Geronimo.. out of curiosity whats preventing you from buying a cam from Korea??

I am shopping for a D80 and its been a headache ... so much so that I might just get them from the states.. luckily I am a service member so its a bit easy..

The whole gray market and not knowing if I am getting a brand new fully protected cam is too confusing to me

So wrong. The D300 and D700 are not even close to being in the same price range. (the D700 will enter the market at almost twice the current price of the D300) The D300 in Korea will go down in price very, very slowly. I've watched camera prices here for 3 years, and noticed there are no sudden price slashes, especially on items as popular as the D300.

I have a D300 that I am thinking of selling. I bought in in April from Adorama in the states, so it is a US camera under warranty. It is a backup to my D3 and a little heavy for a second camera, so I am thinking of getting a D80 or waiting till the D90 comes out. Probably got around 500-700 on the shutter. Can even get you the box if you are so inclined.

no reason not to get a camera in korea. i wrote a guide for this actually:

http://www.davidsmeaton.com/index.php/2007/09/30/super-daves-korean-camera-buying-guide

the gray market issue is simple to understand. the cameras are genuine product, but not imported through the authorised distributors. they avoid some duties, which is how you can get them cheaper.

so they're definitely NOT knockoff cameras ... if that's what you're worried about.

the only downside is that you won't get your warranty recognised in korea. your warranty is legitimate, but because it wasn't imported through official channels (meaning that the vendor didn't get their slice of the profits) they won't acknowledge the warranty.

this is a minor detail in my opinion, for 2 reasons:

1. you can ship it to japan or hong kong for warranty repairs
2. dropping a camera, theft, etc aren't covered under warranty ... so the safety of a warranty is somewhat misguided.

@hepcat: you're right. the D300 will drop, but not much. the D700 is another level of camera and will come in at over $2500. the D300 is around $1700 ... the decision to bring in another camera is to compete with canon who have the 5D (full frame, same as D700 ) and the 40D (cropped, same as D300).

i have the D200, which is over a year old now. i'll go to the D700 when it comes out because the D300 doesn't represent that much of an upgrade for me. D700 is full frame and is a significant upgrade to my beloved D200.

anyways, check out my guide and don't be put off by buying a camera in korea. Smile

I bought my Cannon 350D on the gray market. It has lasted me more than a year and a half (at least I think that's right). They are of reasonable quality. It is usually alright to buy used cameras off the board here.
That is a good point about the D700 being quite a bit different than the D700. I still imagine there will be a price drop, but I agree that it will likely be a slow process and probably not immediate.

I might consider selling my Nikon D80 body if anyone is interested.
Give me an offer if anyone is, as i might upgrade soon.

It is good as new, only used for about a year and is from Europe, so has no problems.

I could let it go with a Lowe Pro bag that fits like a glove and some gadgets.

are you saying gray market means used market? this is not right ... gray market means imported products through non official channels. such as, nikon korea has the sole rights to import and sell nikon cameras. if you import a box of nikon cameras from japan and sell them, then it's gray market.

from what i've read, the D700 is exactly the same as the D700. Wink

Superdave..

Thanks for the link.. very informative... infact, I love the entire blog .

I will try to Cam shop you recommended.

But one question. I was in Yongsan Elec district in a random Cam shop..

I was just about ready to buy a d80 until I noticed a piece missing. A screen protector for the display so the guy opens up what seems to be a junk drawer and pulls one out and attached it to the D80 Nikon. Now I was shocked thinking why didnt he pull one from the box. I started looking closer at the cam and quickly could see this "new" cam he was trying to sell me was used. I did a couple a test shots with my memory card and was able to get a reading of something called shutter actuation from the exif data and it read 11000 some odd shots..
SHEEEESH

Needless to say I am glad I walked away from that. I am sure the Cam was fine but this is what led me to shy away from buying a DSLR from Korea.

I will make a few attempts and bring my wife along this time Smile

blah...

anyhow thanks for the link... You take GREAT photos Smile
