Looking to buy a new video card. The one I have is about 6 years old. I don't play any games, though I do download a lot of TV shows and English movies. I'm partial to ATI cards. Running win XP Home SP2 Intel Pentium 4, 2.8 Ghz CPU with 1 gig of RAM. Thanks for any help.

With that old computer of yours I wouldn't bother spending any more than 120,000. Maybe an 8600GT or HD3650.

I don't even know if he needs a graphics card. I'd go for a 8500 on the Nvidia side or a 2500/2600 for ATI. For the 3xxx range of ATI cards the cheapest available would do.

You need to check if your m/b is AGP or PCI-x. I'm guessing AGP. If so that will both lower your options and increase the price you'll be paying.

The m/b is an Asus P4P 800E. I think it supports both AGP and PCI but what do I know. The old card is a Radeon 9200 I presently have in a PCI slot.

Yea, for a video card you need an AGP... the PCI slots are for sound card, wireless card, etc. A PCI-express slot is for video cards. You can probably pick up an nVidia 6600gt agp for a decent price, should handle your needs.

The GTX280 comes with a 1296 MHz core, 1107 MHz memory as well as a 1024 MB memory capacity. The floating point performance of the GPU is 933 GFlops, which is 80% above the 8800 GTX (518 GFlops). The GTX260 has a 1242 MHz core, 999 MHz memory and 896 MB of memory capacity.

blah blah blah, didn't read the OP? He's looking for a card to fit an AGP slot. Unless there's a GTX2xx card I'm not aware of, they're all PCI-E 2.0...not gonna work on that AGP board.

Thanks for trying.

OP, I looked and that mobo does support AGP only, no PCI-E. I looked at the AGP cards available and there isn't a lot of choice out there. The best card would probably be the 7300GT or the x1550 (70,000ish and 50,000ish respectively).

If you want to get the best AGP card, you're looking at a 2600XT for about 125,000. It's a decent card, but not gonna play many current games at good settings or resolutions.

Why do you want a new video card if you don't play games? Your old one doesn't play videos well anymore? It sounds like the cheapest AGP card will do for you, under $100.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm looking for a new one because the present card is old and the fan is getting a little noisy. I'll check out some of the ones you've recommended on the net and see what kind of deal I can find. Thanks again.

2.8 Ghz? I'd say that calls for about a radeon 9800 pro. Much more than that would be a waste really. That will actually let you play HL2 quite nicely, and anything much newer than that you won't be able to run no matter what you stick in it.

Should be able to get one for like $40 these days.

nVidia 6600gt AGP will more than fulfill your reqs, and is pretty cheap too.

Or look for a passively cooled card.

I had the Radeon 9800 256MB. A strange card, DDR2...super hot. (Temperature wise) A good performer as well.

While we're at it, I've been thinking about picking up a card lately.

I'm running a dual core AMD something or other. With a gig of ram (2? I can't remember) , 250gig hd. I had them take the card it came with out when I bought it because I play virtually no computer games at all.

My only real concern is that I want a TV out jack. Though I suppose it would be nice to be able to run Bioshock (or failing that maybe half life 2).

Thanks in advance.
