A couple I know just went and played it by ear. They stayed at a love motel, and ate fresh seafood on the beach.
Sorry I can't be more helpful. |

I just returned from Sokcho where I spent three days. I stayed here: http://www.sunrisezip.com/ and I paid 70,000 Won for double room per night. It was the long weekend so I wanted to book it advance and I think the price was slightly higher but Sokcho is full of motels so I think you can go there without booking anything.
You can either stay in Sokcho by the beach and then take bus to Seoraksan (about 20 minutes ride, 1000 won) or stay near Seoraksan (motel, hotel or camping). It depends what you want to do there and how long you're planning to stay. |

Thanks. WE also had a super weekened! Sorak SAn is awesome! A wee bit crowded, but very wonderful. We especially enjoyed dipping our feet in the ice-cold mountain stream. Very refreshing!
In addition, we found the people of Seokcho to be very friendly.
Thanks for all of your advice. We'll be back there one day, soon! |

I am going to be heading there at the end of July. I know many people have vacation at this time. Should I reserve a motel, or will I be fine if I just play it by ear? |

Looks like we will be following in your footsteps. Did you drive there or take a bus? IF you took a bus was the station near the beach area? We will be going end of the month. |

I saw on a website that Sokcho beach is only open June 10 to August 18. Does that mean the beach is inaccessible the rest of the year or they just don't have life guards or umbrellas to rent? I was thinking of going this weekend but I'd love to avoid the crowds if I can, so I'd prefer to go next month if the beach is still available. |

Summer beach concessions will be active till the end of august. The beach itself is accessible year-round with shops & bars by the entrance. The express bus terminal is a 5-minute walk from there. The intercity bus terminal is downtown but only about 3000 won by taxi.
Plenty of reasonable accommodation. Motels nearby & there are ajummas wandering around offering minbak rooms which I expect are pleasant & cheap.
Sokcho Beach is fairly hopping these days. Lots of sunshine this week. Lots of eye candy. The human parade there is fascinating. Just a handful of foreigners on view who tend to lug huge packs & look grumpy. At the same time lots of Korean families just enjoying the experience.
If you come between the 12th & 16th theres the Korea Music Festival going on with its main stage just 10 minutes away. A bunch of top name Korean acts performing for free.
You could do worse if you're stuck in Korea this summer. Seoraksan, as mentioned, is just a short busride away too, relatively uncrowded & beautiful. |

Awesome, thanks. I think I'll wait until school starts again so it won't be as crowded. |

If you go with friends and are driving rent a "pension" ie cabin nearby. Pensions have bbqs and are quite nice. So leave early in the morning, hike, get to the pension, bbq and drink. The next day head for the beach, eat raw fish, then sit in traffic back to Seoul for about 6 hours. |
