I'm really sorry if it's been posted before.
I'm not in Korea anymore, and I don't know the language even if I was. I'd like to know if it's getting attention in the domestic press. And if so, what angle they're taking on it.

In the early days of the Korean War, other American officers observed, photographed and confidentially reported on such wholesale executions by their South Korean ally, a secretive slaughter believed to have killed 100,000 or more leftists and supposed sympathizers, usually without charge or trial, in a few weeks in mid-1950. |
I'm not spamming, trolling, etc. I'm genuinely curious.

"The most important thing is that they did not stop the executions," historian Jung Byung-joon, a member of the 2-year-old commission, said of the Americans. "They were at the crime scene, and took pictures and wrote reports." |

The bones of Koh Chung-ryol's father are there somewhere, and the 57-year-old woman believes South Koreans alone are not to blame.
"Although we can't present concrete evidence, we bereaved families believe the United States has some responsibility for this," she told the AP, as she visited one of the burial sites in the quiet Sannae valley. |

Frank Winslow, a military adviser at Daejeon in those desperate days long ago, is one American who feels otherwise.
The Koreans were responsible for their own actions, said the retired Army lieutenant colonel, 81. "The Koreans were sovereign. To me, there was never any question that the Koreans were in charge," he said in a telephone interview from his home in Bellingham, Wash. |

Korea is responsible for this. Not America.
Korea is responsible for what happened in Gwangju, not America.
Korea is responsible for what happened at No Gun Ri, Not America.
Korea, your military did this to your own people over 50 years ago. Quit trying to blame it on America. America has helped this country in so many ways and once again, Korea bit the hand that helps. |

I mentioned it to my high-level students.
They just shrugged their shoulders, and said, "So? It probably happened...Who cares, though? It was a long time ago." |

Well of course it was Korea who did it. Korea has been fighting amongst itself for centuries, long before any American contact. It still is today, except in different ways. |

Yeah, the first thing I read this morning was how the Koreans interviewed felt that the US should shoulder some of the blame for it. "You didn't stop us from killing alll those tens of thousands of people, so it's your fault."
Yes, the US was complicit, and they covered it up, and in that sense, responsible for crimes against humanity, and war crimes. They knew it was happening, they witnessed it, they were spectators like it was a sport, but I haven't read anytning that says they were pulling the trigger. |

He's kind of saying this. Or at least in my reading of it: "You didn't stop us from killing each other, so it's your fault"

If you gave a damn about something called history you might know that the North at the time had a higher quality of life at the time of the war (it wasn't always the Kim Jongil nightmare it is today). American aggression and Cold War threats pushed them safely and firmly into the Stalinist camp. Freedom was comparably equal between both at the time.
The North = statist, collectivist dictatorship
The South = capitalist dictatorship (as long as you were rich bourgeoisie or a general you were okay if not, you're fucked)
I highly doubt that it was "killing Communists." If communists are somehow inhuman, what species are they? What do they look like? What color is their blood?
Gee, I wonder if there were any N-Korean soldiers who were drafted or joined because they had little economic choice. Oh well, THEIR FAULT for being born on the wrong side of the 45th parallel. We must kill communists...at all costs! Forget global warming or economic collapse, we must polarize the world between neo-fascist capitalists and everyone else and then kill them! |

And yet we're not the ones who pulled the trigger. I'm not arguing we weren't complicit in these atrocities. But I can't help but see the statement as an example of a nation (here the Koreans) shifting blame to the outsider. It's struck me that the Americans always make for a good outlet on this front, especially on the Peninsula. |
