Ok... I need your help. I'm trying to decide between a trip to Thailand (majority of time spent in Koh Phangan) or the Philippines (Visayas).
This is most likely my last trip before I head back to the States and I want to make sure its a great one. I went to Thailand this past Christmas, and had a great time at the full-moon party. I told myself that I would go back again when I had the chance. But, I've heard that the Philippines are an amazing place as well.
So which place did you have more fun at? Where should I go? Please don't take into account the fact that I've already been to one place...
Thanks! |

If you want to party, have fun with a younger crowd and not spend a great deal of money then head to Thailand. If you want the real SE Asian experience; remote empty beaches, friendly locals who arent jaded by tourists, getting to ride on the roof of jeepneys, then head to PH. Manila is a toilet and the food can be a bit monotonous also hotels and western style food is pricey considering its the 3rd world, but overall its more of an adventure than Thailand. If you head to PH check out Palawan as well. |

If you want touristy... Thailand or Boracay / Manila.
If you want something different, get away from the tourist places and head to Leyte, Samar, Negros, Palawan or Northern Mindanao.
There are LOTS of great places in the Visayas region and more empty, white sand beaches than you can count.

The most beautiful place in the Philippines is Negros and Dumaguete and then on the Siquijor. It is just a six hour ferry ride from Cebu. Dumaguete is the most clean and scenic city you will see in the Philippines. There is a growing expat community now but it is still nice. And there is so much to do. And just across from Dumaguete is Siquijor. The most beautiful and secluded island in the Philippines. Very few foreigners know about Siquijor and the locals believe it is haunted, so the prices are cheap and there is no one there most of the time. You will love it. |

Really??? The most beuatiful place is Siquijor?? Crap! I was gonna choose that or Camiguin, but have bought my return ticket from Cagayan de Oro to Manila already. I mean I can always change it and am still debating it, it was only $35.
I am looking for NICE beaches but not JUST beaches. I heard Siquijor is boring, but I admit, Dugumete interested me also.
Tawaintroll - have u been to Camiguin? What did you think of that in comparison to Siquijor? I know the beaches on Camiguin are all brown and not white sand (minus White ISland), but I heard it was better than Siquijor for all around activities.
Thoughts? |

I prefer Camiguin over Siquijor (unless you want to visit the witches). The beaches are mostly volcanic gravel (a few are mud) rather than white sand but there are other activities like touring around the island, climbing the volcano, caving, the falls, the hot springs, the cold springs, diving, snorkeling, hiking and generally pretty good people.
The "resorts" are pretty rustic but for the most part, the prices match.

The pension house in Mambajao town is OK too and quite cheap.
To get to CAMIGUIN, one has to travel one and a half hours from Cagayan de Oro City to Balingoan, Misamis Oriental, and take any of the hourly scheduled ferries across the channels of the Mindanao Sea, which dock in either the port of Guinsiliban or Benoni. There is a regular sea and air transportation from Cebu to CAMIGUIN and vice versa.

Take a trip to Hyawha in Seoul walk through the Pinoy market.
Thai food in way better than Pinoy food. Thai ladies are way hotter than Pinoy ladies.
A real no-brainer. |

A real no brainer? Some ppl like to visit other countries to do other things then just stuff their faces and stuff the locals. Sheesh. |

Its not that I *like* witches, but I think it would no doubt be interesting! Really, it will all depend on ferry schedules etc and I wont be 100% sure till I get there. Both Siquijor and Camiguin interest me, right now Camiguin is in the lead! But only slightly. I will be leaving from Bohol also so this may make a difference.
How is Cagayan de Oro? Or more specifically, if we leave Camiguin early and are making our way down to Cagaygan de Oro, is there anything cool to see along the way?
I am thinking of waiting till we get to the main area of Camiguin and checking out the palces before we book. Did you stay at those 2 places ttompatz? |

I haven't stayed in CDO.
I have stayed at the 2 places I showed you on Camiguin. They are both on the beach and the service is OK. The prices reflect the accommodation.
We used the pension in town when we were in Siquijor.
From Bohol you can charter a boat off the beach for the trip to Siquijor for about p3000 (single or a boat load of friends).
I flew into Camiguin (easiest way from Cebu - http://www.flyseair.com/ ).
Unless you know someone, you are not likely to be taken to see the witches. It's not like they are a tourist attraction but if you want to hire one for their services, it can be arranged by asking around the market.

I prefer the Philippines myself....has a more homely feel to it being more an island destination than part of an Asian continent.
More people can speek English in PH as well. |

I recommend if you go to thailand to go to Haad yuan. Better beach than Haad Rin and its only a boat taxi away (200-300 bt). You will not regret it. Best food anywhere and once a week they have really cool jungle parties at Guy's bar. Its not as sleezy as Haad Rin and if you feel the desire to go to haad rin...its only a boat ride away. |

Up to you, both countries have lots of women, beautiful places to see, beaches, etc. Philippines has many English speaking people which for me is an advantage.
In the last 3 years have been in Thailand 6 times, Philippines 2 times. I have enjoyed both places.
I am sure you will find what you want for you last great blast. |

Phillo's is a more exciting, dangerous and buzzing place in my opinion.
Much less tourism there but be prepared to spend A LOT more than Thailand, depending where you go... Manila is not cheap for accommodation.
More empty beaches in Phillo's, but harder to get around as Thai is so convenient. |

I've spent a bit of time in Thailand, there is quite a lot to explore beyond Khao San road and the full moon parties... travelling by bus or train is incredibly cheap and really easy. A lot of people knock Thailand because it is a more mainstream destination, but it is really as mainstream or off the beaten track as you want it to be... anyway exploring the land of smiles is a great way to spend a few weeks. |
