Is the 17th of this month a holiday? My phone says yes, but my handler says "No holiday. Law change" Truth or bollocks?

My company gives out a holiday calander to everyone, and July 17th isn't shaded red, so I'd venture to guess a no on that one.

Chuseok is on the Ultra Sucky procession of Sept 13th, 14th, and 15th this year. (Sat, Sun, Mon) Mad

My phone doesn't show the 17th in red but I was looking at someone else's or a an old calander (can't remember which) and it had the 17th as red. I asked at work what the deal was and no one knew wtf I was talking about, so my guess is it isn't a red day (national holiday).

Too bad though, I would have loved it if it was!

Apparently, they had to chop a few holidays because the government is slowly moving to a 40-hour/5-day work week.

They got rid of a couple of holidays a couple of years ago. Arbor day was one of them, and I forget what the other(s) were. Maybe Hangul day or something?

At the time the Korean Times prefaced the news by saying that "As Korea has the highest number of public holidays amongst OECD nations..." or some such drivel. They neglected to mention that in most OECD nations if a holiday falls on a weekend it's carried forward to the Monday. The number of public holidays in this country varies quite wildly from year to year and I think that if they counted the *actual* number of days, rather than the *potential* number of days Korea would rank pretty low. Last year there was a 'golden' Chuseok because it fell on Wed/Thur/Fri or something like that. This year it's a 'moldy green' Chuseok. Lame as.

Next year, National Foundation day falls on Chuseok and it's only a 2 day holiday on October 2nd and 3rd. This means fewer holidays if you're here next year. The # of holidays seems to be decreasing while Korea already had much fewer holidays than most other countries.

My main public school works 2 to 3 Saturdays per month until 1PM, but my co-teacher said maybe someday they will have a true 5 day/40 hour work week as just 2 years ago they were still working a 6 day/54 hour work week. Yikes.

I don't have to come in on Saturdays.

What I find funny, is that many Koreans think that North Americans get tons of vacation time. But, in reality you're lucky if you get more than 10 days of vacation time if you work for some big corporation. Maybe if you go to some European countries you get a month off, but not in Canada.

Where I'm from in Canada, the government only recognizes the existence of one holiday. Remembrance Day. Every other holiday in the year does not give anyone time off work (because they only acknowledge secular holidays now).
