Can anyone help at all?
I need shots for rabies and hepatitis B befor I leave for SE Asia (though I won't actually be arriving till November).
I went to a variety of clinics and doctors today, thankfully I got the one for Japanese B Encephalitis. Its a bit complicated to go into everything I was told today but basically I couldn't find a fast track course for hep. b (intervals between the 3 jabs were extensive) and for rabies they said I should just take medicine if I get bitten which I thought was a bit strange.
I am in the sticks / boons and was wondering if there was a traveller's clinic in Seoul or if anyone knows of anywhere where I can get a fast track programme for rabies and hep. b |

I wouldn't worry about rabies unless you plan to get bit by a rabid animal. You can get the series after the fact if it becomes necessary. Stay away from bats and mad dogs.
Heb B takes time for the series. You get partial immunity from the 1st one and the other 2 are boosters. Depending on the type it takes from 3-6 months (3 shots one month apart or 2 shots 6 months apart) to complete. START NOW.

Thanks for the reply. Your info is in accordance with what I was told earlier except the bit about temporary immunisation; they mentioned nothing about this 
I can start the vaccines from Monday (I have a small cold at the moment and couldn't start them today as a result) but how long does the temporary vaccine last? The doctor said I would have 1 now, 1 after a month and then again after 6 months.
Problem with rabies is that i may go hiking and treking and into the jungles and some countries like Myanmar and Thailand do have lots of monkeys etc. I will be travelling from September till May next year. the international clinic in seoul itaewon charges like 200k won for the rabies vaccine.

Like I said, start your hep series now. You can get the final booster from any hospital down there.
If you get bit by a monkey you will want to see a doctor ASAP anyway so rabies is OK if you do it now or just ignore it until you get bit. No worry.

Depends on your body... It's not like it lasts for 6 months and then expires... it is more like resistance to catching it in the first place.
IF you are well and healthy and stay that way, then you are unlikely to catch it after the shot and 1st booster - healthy immune system and some antibodies.
If you are run down, tired and/or under the weather a bit, then your immune system is already burdened so you are more susceptible...
It is no big deal to pop into a hospital or doctors office and get the 2rd booster (3rd shot) at your convenience when you are down there. $20 and 20 minutes of your time is a cheap price to pay for your peace of mind and continued well being.

Because of my coming vacation to Africa I can understand your concerns about getting shots. And, I have heard of strange responses from my Docter here about some shots, or should I say for not getting them.
I did get my Hep A and B. Hep A was very expensive, wow for one shot. I am the same with you about the Hep B, Had the first shot, and the secound, the third in September.
I was asking about some of the basic ones like tetnas, they will not do it, suppost to only do it when hurt? Same with many others I would like for Africa. Good luck |
