Want a can of real peas?
Well, you can faggetaboutit, if you know what I mean.
HomePlus had them, DelMonte brand peas, for a while, but they've dropped them, along with most of the DelMonte vegetables.
You can still get S&W canned vegetables, but they are about twice the price and half the quality.
Want a can of S&W mixed vegetables for 2,980 won? I doubt it. The DelMonte sweet peas were 1,500 won, and were very good.
But you can still get a can of Korean "peas" at HomePlus. (If you've never tried them and want to, don't get more than one can, unless you plan to bring some back home as a joke.)
The funny thing about all this is that S&W canned vegetables are the el cheapo brand back in the States. You could get them at 3 for $1 on sale, easy. I wonder why they cost 10 times as much in Korea? And I wonder why they cost twice as much as DelMonte, which is a top notch brand? |

No, peas are not gross. They both taste good and are good for you. People who disparage canned peas should be made to sit at the table until they have cleaned their plate.
That's too bad about Del Monte. I've never come across their canned peas, but I've never been able to taste the difference between brands. Korean peas are an abomination.
I've seen S & W brand at Kim's Club and HomEver in Yatap recently. I don't remember the price. |

No more pics allowed on eslcafe.
I don't like Korean peas. They're hard like bullets. |

Peas are cool.
I used to eat mushy peas on toast at least twice a week as a student.

Are you positive they've dropped them? With most imported products, they'll be on the shelf for a time, then disappear when they are sold out and reappear when the next shipment comes in in a couple of weeks/months. |

They were all half price in the clearance bin today in Gwangju, so I think they are getting rid of them. |

Those peas the OP is talking about are the soft American type, but the other peas referred to as Korean peas that do come from China are hard as rocks as they need to be simmered a few hours.
I like Homeplus as they are hinting at having selection with more service at better prices. I just wish they had more locations. I would have to go 90km of winding mountain roads to get to the nearest Homeplus. Emart on the other hand, just strings everyone along with artificially high prices and ridiculously limited selection with very little added service. |

Cranberry juice is another product that often appears and disappears at Homeplus and Emart. I know you can buy it at Costco all the time, but then again it depends how close you are.
Maybe you can look for peas at Costco and buy a huge amount of them. |

Yangjae Costco hasn't carried them in the year and a half I've lived semi-near. I've had to go the hour on the subway to Itaewon to get the frozen peas, which are even better than canned ones. |

it's fascinating how even the most trivial item i had back home acquires such a profound meaning over here.
everything is overpriced (10'000 won for a 1$ deodorant),
everything is so rare (fitting shoes),
and if you happen to find it, then it certainly won't be on the shelves after 2 weeks (dried blueberries from can-a-da).
korea: where craving to eat a real pizza abolishes seksual desire. |

The appearing and disappearing products are a common theme throughout supermarkets in Korea. |

Yeah you have to keep your eyes open and shop around. One month, there may be one shelf or so of canned western goods, the next theres a whole section of it (same E-Mart). The markdowns don't always mean they will be discontinued. It usually just means the expiration date is nearing, or it's a seasonal item.
Suprising that they would drop most of the DelMonte, they sold good enough for Dongwon to jump in and buy part of them.
