I work in an international language school in England and make an ok wage.

Seeing as my students are from countries such as Brazil, Spain, Korea, Japan etc. and seem to be well off I was wondering if the approaching recession here is going to buck me up?

Probably quite a silly question to ask. I was daydreaming before and it struck me that with the international factor, TEFL in the UK might actually be untouchable in that respect. Or in fact may grow as the econmy gets weaker and more rich people come to exploit it?

It is probably obvious by now I dont know the first thing about economics, so feel free to enlighten me.

I think almost all economies are suffering right now. Back in the late 90's many many Koreans had to come home because their family couldn't afford to keep sending them money. Even the rich were pressured into bringing back kids--it was unpatriotic to send money out of the country. An international school with students from everywhere is probably as secure as you can get in this industry. I also think people in gov't funded schools are probably safe.

If you're Canadian and find yourself unable to find work in Canada and unable to collect Employment Insurence.

Find a phone book. Go to the blue pages. Call Social Services.
You need to have close to zero funds in your bank account.
Talk to a social worker. It will take approximately 10-20 minutes.
The next day they'll sent a worker to your apartment. For another interview.

Alternately you can visit the office in person. In the good ol days you could score multiple Emergency cheques without other offices knowing.

I did it several times. Possibly the easiest 600$ dollars I made in my life.

Some Koreans are starting to send their kids to places like the Philippines and New Guinea. Cheap, high levels of English. Education is generally recession proof, however.
