The 19 physicians and executives ate American sirloin, with one top doctor saying it "tastes good and tender" and telling fellow South Koreans not to worry about getting mad cow disease from eating U.S. beef.

"There is no food whatsoever that we can say is 100 percent safe," said Choo Soo-ho, head of the Korean Medical Association, South Korea's largest doctors' lobby. "But I can say the chance of catching mad cow disease (from eating U.S. beef) is nearly zero percent."

Quote:
Choo said he organized the event with other doctors' and business associations to help people overcome fears of mad cow disease that he said were "not verified and sometimes exaggerated" and are now threatening to hurt the nation's economy.

"I love meat. This tastes good and tender," Choo said, dipping a piece of beef in a small salt dish.

"Eat it without any uneasiness. I can guarantee (the safety) by staking the honor of the Korean Medical Association," Moon Tai-joon, honorary chairman of the doctors' association, told reporters amid a barrage of camera flashes and smokes from the grill at his table.

The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a major business lobby, co-organized the event without government help in an effort to end the "useless argument" over U.S. beef so the nation can concentrate on overcoming economic difficulties, said spokesman Park Jong-kab.

About damn time. I'm sure you'll see this as a tiny blurb in the middle of Korean newspapers.

I'm sure that it'll go far. Hey, where can I get one of those candles for the vigils? I want to join in on the fun!

It seems like protesting is a hobby of many Koreans. Why not just allow the U.S. beef into Korea and let Koreans vote with their Won? If you're worried about the safety of U.S. beef, just don't buy it.

SK's are no longer protesting against the safety of US meat. They are protesting against the policies of Lee Myung Bak, along with anti-US sentiment. Get it straight!

The fear, especially of students, is that US beef and by products will be put into all kinds of food and there will be no way of knowing. A bigger fear is that it will go into school lunches and students won't know or have a choice.

Once again, this is based on the false assumption that US beef is dangerous.

Too bad most Koreans don't read English. And too bad this is on Fox News, not a reputable outlet.

Doctors are not that smart. It would be like letting pharmacists decide the safety of drugs. This is a cheap publicity stunt.

Great, the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a major business lobby organized this. We can't get a more disinterested party than this, now can we?

The protestors had a point. The president conceded it and apologized twice. It was because of the work of the protesters that the doctors are eating safer beef a standard that other countries, including Japan have adopted.

The only people who don't want this issue to go away are the expats who will continue to distort what really happened.

"Unrelenting protests forced South Korea's government to negotiate an amendment to the April deal last month to import only beef from younger cattle considered less at risk of the disease. Still, smaller protests have continued.

So those 300 Koreans who showed up to protest the protest are all expats in disguise ?

Then please explain to my why these doctors, pharmacists, and the Korean public are not concerned about the Korean testing (or extreme lack of it, I should say) of Korean animals?

They could be eating Korean mad cows and not even know it.

Internationally, Korean beef is considered a risk BECAUSE IT IS NOT TESTED TO INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS.

Keep blowing your smoke, komerican. The bottom line is that the people behind the protests aren't concerned about health -- they want to protect their overpriced Korean beef market.

According to international testing standards, Korean beef is UNSAFE. Interestingly, 30-month+ US beef DOES pass these standards.

And now there are anti-US beef protesters going after businesses who sell US beef.

It's amazing you say expats are the ones distorting things when several thousand South Koreans are crying that they will die from mad cow if they eat US beef.

It's not just the doctors who eat US beef. It seems LMB was willing to put his money where his mouth is as well back in April when he visited the US..

Quote:
Washington, D.C. Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus (D.-Mont) welcomed the announcement today that Korea intends to fully open its market to all U.S. beef products, consistent with the guidelines of the World Animal Health Organization. Once implemented, this new protocol struck by the U.S. and Korean governments could mark an end to Koreas 5-year ban on U.S. beef products and the resumption of normal beef
trade between our two countries. Baucus, who is blocking consideration of the U.S.- Korea trade agreement until all cuts of U.S. beef from cattle of all ages is on Korean store shelves, said he looked forward to seeing a fully open Korean market for U.S. beef.

I have been clear for years that Korea must provide full market access for all U.S. beef, and I believe this deal can get us there if the Korean government follows through. The proof is in the porterhouse, said Baucus. The Korean President and I sat down to a big Montana steak last night at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and when U.S. beef is once again available in Korean grocery stores, I look forward to working with President Lee and his new government on moving our trade relationship forward. I will closely monitor the implementation of this new import protocol, and I expect great results.

Senator Baucus gave a speech at last nights U.S. Chamber of Commerce dinner honoring Koreas President Lee Myung Bak. Montana beef from Montana Ranch Brand was served to dinner guests.

Gotta love this remark. So, errr, if they're not that smart, who should we be listening to on food safety issues, komerican? Do tell.
