I've always had Koreans to sponsor my cellphones since I've been in country so this has not been an issue. However, my most recent sponsor at my last job has cancelled my cell phone yesterday and I'd like to have it reactivated.

I remember some friends basically being told wherever they went that "foreigners can not have cell phones in their own name", but lately I've heard some people saying the opposite so I'm not sure. My phone is with LG Telecom, can I just go and have it activated?

Can I get on a plan or do I have to use pay-as-you-go?

I want to get it in my name because I'm tired of bothering Koreans to sponsor me and change my phone every year.

Quit posting such stupid questions and go find out for yourself. Show some brains.

Your new phone will be PPS, as are most non-F-series foreigners these days. If you can't keep your old number then that's the way it goes.

Uh huh. So I should walk from store to store, try communicating in broken Korean and spend a whole afternoon finding out what I could find out on Dave's in a few minutes? My co-workers wouldn't know this, they aren't foreigners. The search function on Dave's sucks too if you hadn't noticed.

Anyway, you're an ass.

What the hell does that mean? Most non F series foreigners ARE phones? are PPS? What is PPS?? If you don't have anything useful to say, just leave it alone.

To answer the OP's question, LG are the most foreigner friendly cellphone company. Go to an LG store (not an independent one that works for all 3 companies) with your ARC, bank book and a Korean friend. They should be able to set you up very easily on a contract. You should be able to keep your old number.

So you've been fired from your last job for consistently coming in late and now you don't know how to get a cell phone? Yet you've been living in Korea for over a year?

What's next, you going to start a thread asking people how to use chopsticks or where the nearest Kim-bap shop is? Rolling Eyes

Fired? What the f*ck are you talking about? My last hagwon shut down because it went bankrupt... nobody was fired. I left there on good terms in fact and still talk to my old boss. I made a thread about it two or three months ago if you care to look, it shut down on my eleventh month and I was paid full severance and the last month's salary.

Of course my old director isn't going to let me keep the phone in her name once I moved to a new place and work for another school. She was just letting me keep the phone for a month until I got settled as a favour.

I've only had one cell phone in Korea, which was handed directly to me on my first week of work at the hagwon in my director's name. Of course I don't have any experience with cell phones because I did nothing for the last one except for paying the bill.

Quit trolling me and making wild accusations, then learn how to read properly you twit. (P.S. I'm eating homemade Kimbap with chopsticks right this minute).

I got my cellphone two days ago. Walked into a LG store with a Korean friend, and 20 minutes later, got out with a brand new cell phone! The phone was free with a one year contract, the charger too, and they even gave me one of these little decorative thing for my phone!

Yeah, I am in need of a new phone, too. I've asked some Korean friends and I've gotten completely different answers from all. One suggested the internet (auction.co.kr), then another said that you'll just pay for a bunch of crap. Another said to just get an aggressive Korean and go to one of the SHOW stores. Then another friend dissed that idea and said that even with an aggressive Korean, I won't get a great discount. Some said to stay with my company, others said to switch. ARRG!!!! I've gone to multiple stores myself but none of them (out of 5 that I went to) spoke anything more than very broken English (and my Korean was about the same). They tried charging me 400,000 won for a new phone. Ugh.

Basically...I'm looking for answers, too. I have a contract, though, not a pay as you go.

Maybe try BuytheKorea.com. I haven't used them myself, and don't know the people running it. But it looks like they can provide cell phone service to foreigners.
