Hey nolegirl,
There's no subway from Seoul to Daejeon. Your best bet would be to take a train or a bus. From Seoul Station you have three options for trains: the KTX (fastest and most expensive), the Saemaul (middle ground), and the Mugunghwa (slowest and cheapest). My personal preference is the Saemaul. What the KTX has in speed I find it totally lacks in comfort.
You can take a bus from the Express Bus terminal in Kangnam.
Here's information about the trains: http://www.korail.com/en/pr/pr21100/w_pr21110.jsp
Be careful with the spelling on that site: Seoul and Daejeon.
Sorry to say I don't have a link for info about buses. |

I think the bus is 10,000 won on way, and so is the slow train (both 2 hours). Not bad. |

I always go First Class. It's not like it's expensive. W30,000 depending on the day. Seats are WAY more comfortable and much more leg/elbow room.

Go to the Kyung-bu terminal (경부선) to get your tickets. First class bus (우등) is 12,000. The cramped express bus (고속) is 9000(?) |

That's interesting, FRANK, to be honest I don't take it often enough to have thought about upgrading. When you say 30,000, are you saying that's the price of a first class ticket to Daejeon, or is it 30,000 on top of the normal ticket price? Round trip tickets to Busan a few weeks back were 98,000 won, which kind of shocked me. |

No, it's 30,000 for a one-way ticket, total. One way First class to Busan is (was) 70,000-ish. I mainly upgrade to FC for the room, but my uni also gives me a discount on KTX tickets, so it almost comes out to regular price if I go on a weekday.
Fisrt Class seating on the KTX is just like the First Class buses: three seats across instead of the cramped 4 of economy class seating/buses. |

Don't forget you ultimate destination in Daejeon. The train station has a subway connection but the Express Bus terminal doesn't. Any trips I make to Seoul I always use the KTX. 42 minutes. Time is money. I find the KTX to be comfortable enough. Especially for only 42 minutes. |

There's only one subway line, so unless your destination happens to be on it, it's not big help. Both my house and my uni are not. |
