The Korean broker said, ``Language school owners prefer white people to colored foreigners. In the market, the demand for white instructors is very high.''
A manager of a major English education academy also agreed that skin color is sometimes more important than teaching ability on the market. |

I'm Puerto Rican and I have dark brown hair and brown eyes. Is this really going to be a factor in the way I'm treated in S. Korea? I'm kinda white though. Was born and raised in the US.... Sorry, this article is making me sick. Well, at least this part is. |

First of all - Nice screen name Dr. Octo
So I look pretty "different" ethnically - depending on where I am I can pass for Asian, Native American, or Latino (I'm actually eastern-european). I had trouble with recruiters - but you shouldn't work with recruiters anyway. To generalize, Koreans and other east Asians, are prejudiced against black people. Also, if you look like a troll (nothing offensive here - I love Latin America/ have traveled there a lot/ was married to a Peruvian - but some people look like trolls) I think Koreans will take notice - but who cares. You might want to go with a big city though - I live in dowtown seoul - I see black english teachers every week - I think I even saw a mexican/american english teacher once and there seem to be same shady looking latinos (columbians?) around - I yelled "Oye" at some guy that walked by last night but he didn't respond.
Realize that Koreans are obsessed with being white - I enjoy flaunting my dark skin. |

I have a similar look as you and after asking around, I found out that some people think I'm Arab, even though I have Southern European heritage. Apparently, even some at my school, when they saw my photo that I had sent in, had second thoughts on hiring me because of my tan complexion.
A word of advice; try to 'lighten up" your photo before you send it out.
Apparently, if you're Portuguese, Italian, Greek, etc, that doesn't count as "White" here in Korea.

ridiculous rampant racist prejudices.
i enjoy telling koreans that they look japanese/chinese/vietnamese or even somalian. some of them -those who still are able to maintain composture- will reply that they are "korean-korean". then i just ask whether their relatives are perhaps "korean-japanese"/"korean-somali", and .... i love keeping my calmness in front of yelling and crazy people. |

Wait a second.......a story about people other than white NETs getting busted for illegally teaching English? What is this nation coming to? I feel the unraveling of Korean society is at hand. |

Why don't they just publish the names and locations of all the academies involved so that other academies will be too freaked out to try this shit? |

I like the total contradiction here:

the six had light colored skin and spoke as if they came from countries whose mother tongue was English. |
BUT

They mainly taught pre school and primary school children, as it is easy to conceal their poor proficiency |
Great reporting! Which is it? Do they speak English perfectly or do they have poor proficiency? |

I've met some Lebonese who had blue or green eyes. Arabs are defined linguistically, not genetically, after all. |

Because of Korea's freaky libel laws, possibly. |
