Not sure how reliable this source is, but if he was caught on tape whispering, "Obama's talking down to black people.I want to cut his nuts off", no wonder he's apologizing and back pedaling |

I've been wanting to cut Jesse and Al Sharptons nuts off for years. 2 media whores that richly deserve to be neutered. |

"Gotcha journalism" strikes again.
MSNBC Reports (more reliable source than what looks like the blog Peppermint posted, above) |

Blacks get away with sayin anything it's pretty much ok.
Why isn't Jackson going onto Sharpton's radio show to defend himself and keep his job tomorrow? That's what happens right? (And why isn't Sharpton holding a rally against him?) |

Because their politics coincide and they would like to minimize this. Why does this surprise you? |

Gee, whiz, might be a little professional jealousy as well. Jackson ran for president a couple of times just to make a statement, knowing full well he'd never get close - I'm pretty sure the statement he was making is that America is too racist to elect a black man, so his plan was to win by losing. Somebody forgot to tell all that to Barack, of course, and now he's got his eyes on the ...
Oh, well. |

Ok, now try that on TV. It's forgivable though as it's not a deliberate statement. Will be forgotten soon. |

I would be completely unsurprised in Fox News left the mic hot on purpose. Those guys are so shady they should be in Jesse's camp.
Additionally, why haven't I heard anyone call Jackson a racist? I would be technically correct as Obama was talking about fatherless families in general, not specifically in reference to black people. (Yeah, it was a speech in front of black and white people, but why the focus on black folk?)
Jackson's screw up is his old timey world view. I'm from the industrial wasteland of Iowa and there are two black people here, but a hell of a lot of fatherless kids. Why's it got to be about race? It's really about class, not race, I just wish that would have been Obama's retort. |

His retort? That should be his goddamned campaign. And to his credit, he's sometimes pressed this theme.
Listen, people, desegregation is already dead because of SCOTUS' pronouncement in Meredith. West Virginia already receives Affirmative Action attention as much as any African-American hailing from PG county, Maryland. Obama must be familiar with both of these trends. |

That was the one thing Edwards had going for him. He was willing to tackle the taboo topic of class in America. I don't know why Obama isn't using Edwards more.
The thing about class in America is that is lingers below the surface. In countries like the UK class is much more prominent, and it gets addressed as such. No one in the US wants to talk about how the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, or at least stay poor, because there's always that lingering suspicion that one day "I" might be rich. Say what you will about Michael Moore he was fairly eloquent in one of his books, I think it was 'Stupid White Men', in discussing why poor people continue to prop up our ridiculous system.
I'd also like to hear Obama talking about a progressive flat tax. That would bring some of the Republicans over and seems the fairest system for federal income tax. Though I would probably be more aggressive than he would, say 50% taxes if you make more than 10mil a year. |

Once, that would have worried me, but now that I know people will self-correct, I don't feel so anxious.
As for class, that seems to be the word du jour around here.
Not that I'm against it, but I don't see a lot of specifics about how one can address class. In fact, I'd say there are a couple reasons that class is a problematic issue to tackle:
1) Taxing the bejeesus out of the rich results in them passing the costs down.
2) "The poor" are not really one unified voting bloc. Rather, you have poor (often) inner-city minorities who support the Democrats and poor rural whites who support the GOP. The latter do so because of issues like religion and gun ownership.
Anyway, what specific proposals do y'all have in mind to address class? |
