I'm in BKK now and there are about a million small travel shops you can walk into on the day and organise your travel for the next day or so at probably better prices....a cab (from upstairs at the airport) will cost you 250 baht to Khao San Road where you an enquire. That's roughly 8 bucks US...for a room for a night expect to pay about the same...they know all the ins and outs of travel around here.

go with the early flight it will run you about 80 one way. They have a breakfst bar open in the morning.

if time isn't a big issue I would definitely go with the train on this trip, Thai railways are cool. Get a 'lower sleeper' (means lower bunk) and enjoy the early morning scenery as you come into Surat Thani. Plus vendors constantly getting on and off selling you snacks and drinks (beer if you want it too). It is more like the real Thailand. or just hit the beach, that's cool too!

Well, there is some interesting information on this thread. Yes, Bangkok Airways owns the airport. It might be the nicest airport I have ever seen. Now, Thai also flies the route, but the price is the same as Bangkok Airways. You could also fly into Surat Thani on a budget carrier (Air Asia). Then, you can book a transfer to the islands. It is around 500 baht to Samui from the airport including transfer and boat.

we took an overnight train down to surrat thani and then a boat to koh pangan (via koh samui)... it WAS a long trip but also a really fun one (AND it doubled as a decent enough hotel for the night). all parties involved still attest to it being one of the best parts of our trip.
we flew back from surat thani with "One-to-go" and had only purchased the tickets just 5 days before in bangkok...

it was christmas, which is also a peak travel season there... and we didn't spend an arm and a leg...
