What is the point of putting an ad in a newspaper of a country that is not involved? Does he think the Americans will be sympathetic to Korea's argument and put pressure on Japan to back off? After the shit Korea just pulled with the beef protests?
Is there a Korean expression meaning "Go piss up a rope"? |

The singer is actually a pretty damn cool guy, minus his used-to-be purple hair. He's a guy who's well-known to give lots of money to charity, continuously. Several thousand dollars a month or so. and he doesn't even own his own home..
Garnering popularity maybe?
I obviously side with him, but do wonder about the effectiveness of the ad. Sure, it's meant to be informative. Lots read the NYT, perhaps a couple million people will learn that Dokdo does belong to Korea. What difference is that supposed to make?
Perhaps, in the international trial that I think either or both countries are preparing for, having more people know the truth might be helpful.. |

``The advertisement is an act of civilian diplomacy,'' Yonhap News quoted Kim as saying. ``Civilians' unified move against U.S. beef imports made Seoul and Washington sit at a renegotiation table. I think our collective move, embodied in the ad campaign, will be a steppingstone to globally inform people that Dokdo belongs to Korea.'' |
Does this singer think it is up to the United States and Americans to referee this dispute? If it is, I suspect he just guaranteed the U.S. would side with Japan.
But obviously it is not up to the U.S.
"a steppingstone to globally inform people that Dokdo belongs to Korea"
Let me give you a tip, buddy. One way to win a dispute like this when global opinion is at stake is to have lots of friends among the countries of the world. Someone once said "To have a friend, you need to be a friend."
How many countries can Korea count as a friend?
America used to be, but I think you can scratch it off your list. |

Dokdo is obviously Korean territory, but their means of going about making their case is so heavy handed and self-absorbed that they end up looking ridiculous and jingoistic. |

Yes, it is pretty foolish. Sea of Japan has the history books on its side, no matter how many Koreans want the name to change, it won't change. Dokdo/Takeshima? That's up to the international courts to decide. Personally, I don't think Japan really cares that much about it. It just uses it to yank Korea's chain. |

Do you use your brain sometimes? A singer gives thousands of $ a month to charities... wooow that's at least 1% of what he makes!!! Now he has that ad... Garnering popularity maybe?! No s-hit!!!
You obviously side with him... why?? Are you an expert on the topic? You talked to some Japanese people about that too? |

They don't.

They do (the ones that actually are aware of it, anyway). |

Takeshima is a Japanese island that was taken over by Korea at gunpoint. Learn the facts, stooge. |

Dokdo is Korean territority, ceded to Japan under threat of violence in 1905. It's a small issue, though. |

in japan, it's a non-issue. nobody in japan even knows takeshima's location in the sea of japan, let alone get bummed about it. |
