I'm finally visiting my family after near 3 years in Korea. I need to do the criminal background check while I'm here though. I've got 5 weeks left, so what do I need to do?

I haven't kept abreast of the changes since I extended my last visa to get the new job. Althought the freaking Immigration officer wrote "used" on the current visa I'm on... f*cking twit. So that will make re-entry a breeze I'm sure.

Anyway, I digress, do I need an FBI level check or a local check. And, what about the whole apostillization nonsense is that still a requirement?

from all that i have read and researched over the last couple of days, you do need a criminal background check, but at the state (local) level is fine.

and yes, the apostilled form is still a requirement.

i haven't done the process yet myself but i have been looking into it and that is what i have found so far!

there was a really good example of what you would need on a recruiter's website...i think it was asknow's....i think.

get a state (local) check. from what i hear, it can take weeks to get an fbi check and its just not worth the time and effort.

my local check was in houston. i applied for the check...the lady got the check done in about 15 minutes...she sent it to one of her higher-ups to get it notarized and another 15 min later she gave me everything i needed. next, i mailed my notarized cbc to the state for appostilization...and 3-5 days later it was sent back to me.

I just got a local check but it is only for the city/county I lived in for about 8 years before going to Korea. So pretty much my years of majority were spent in this place I have the check for. It's notarized and all that fun stuff.

Should I have gotten it in a sealed envelope?

Will I need a state level check or is this one good enough?

Now I need to get it apostilled?

Thanks for any help. I know this is probably answered 50 different ways and in as many places but I don't want to go cross-eyed reading right now.

Where are you now?

If you're in Korea, take the check to the U.S. Embassy, execute an affidavit swearing to the check's authenticity, and get it notarized by the consular official. See the sticky thread entitled "GUIDE: AUTHENTICATING A BACKGROUND CHECK FROM WITHIN KOREA" for complete details. This process works in lieu of an apostille for applicants who are already in Korea.

A sealed envelope is not necessary. It'd have to be opened to attach an apostille or embassy-notarized affidavit in any case.

A local check is sufficient according to Immi regulations.
