Well, I have gotten really really fed up and decided that my family and I are heading back home. I hate the monotonous rat race in this country with the lack of breaks, the lack of annual holidays and the constant struggle between foreigners and non-travelled and incompetent Koreans.
I will be very happy to head back home and am starting to make arrangements for the start of 2009. I have only been here for 2 and a half years but I am sick of this country, the petty immigration rules and the constant pushing and bumping.
I can't wait to get back home with a garden when I can have some BBQ's, laze around in the house, have more than one floor to my home and enjoy watching good TV.
Anyone else feeling the same about Korea? Anyone noticed a change in this country in the last year? |

No. It's the same old place. Like you seemed to say in the first bit of your post.

In the beginning 9 months ago, I felt that way because my hagwon is a #$#$ hole. But as I got to know the people, I realize the problems are only what you make of them. You don't have to follow all of the stupid rules. But best of luck to ya. |

If you already own a home with a BBQ and a garden...why are you here at all? |

same as everyone else probably: to earn $ in order to buy/rent a home with a garden and to throw bbq parties where you put things in buns instead of leafs...
korea definately makes me miss the comforts of home and manners... i can't wait to leave, but still have to finish my contract... bummer... i envy the op... |

I feel you. I recently received an interesting offer from a family friend who I used to work for years ago. He wants me to come to FLA and manage one of the small beachfront hotels he owns in Daytona Beach. Daytona's kind of sketchy, but it beats here and it's not boring. Plus it has a beach.
I just finished a textbook series and have offers for more writing projects (the quality of my writing is a little better off-dave's - really!). I figure I can write in Florida as well as I can here, so why not do it there?
I don't know how long the wife and I will stay on the ROK, but the writing is definitely on the wall/the clock is ticking/what-have-you.... |

My wife, daughter and I got our tickets for November!
Korea ain't all that bad, but the alternative is SO MUCH better.
Good luck Whistleblower. You've always seemed like a decent fellow that could recognize the ridiculousness of Korea without getting racist and whiney. |

I used to think that I would stay in this country for a while and make this place my home but I have grown to dislike this country. Everybody is super competitive, everything is a competition (job, family, house, kids education), I just don't want my kid to grow up in this country.
I hope that I don't come across as being that guy who is whining about this country. There are many things great about this little country but I didn't know I would be leaving so quickly. All in all, I am excited about going back home but I may come back. The next 6 months is going to go so quickly. |

My contract is up NEXT WEEK! I fly out at 2pm on the 19th and I swear I am counting the hours! 204 to go actually. haha
But seriously, I feel the same way. There are people and things I will miss about Korea but there are people and things I miss about America more. |

Well, WB... good luck. We're planning to stay another 5 years to suck as much money out of the local economy as possible before buying a home in the USA.
I smile at the bank people every time I send money out of Korea. |

Of course, of course.
I've got a few resumes.
Also, I'm not too proud. I'll boink anything. I'm ready and aiming to please the old ladies. The sky's the limit as far as age is concerned. Don't know about those dirty old men, though. That's more money. |

Whistleblower: I hear ya. I've only been here a few months and I already can't wait to go home... I'm counting the days! This always happens when I live abroad. I guess it's a good thing to appreciate your own country. Good luck with everything. |
