I'm heading to Mongolia in August. 2.5 weeks with the girl, and another week solo. So we're probably going to try to do a 2 week circuit around the country side together. Has anyone done such a thing on their own? Any suggested routes? Daily costs? Any tips?

Do you know they're having riots, brutal police crackdowns, etc. right now?

Mongolia is? Without having viewed the internet for it, what's that all about?

So is Seoul.

Riots broke out after their recent election. It seems to be calming down, and I'm sure it will be back to normal by the time I go next month. Anyways, it wasn't like they were going after tourists like in Nepal.

I have a question for anyone who has taken the Beijing-Ulan Bator train. I'm heading to China in late July and I want to take said train, spend a few days in and around Ulan Bator and from there fly back to Incheon. The problem is, that I can't seem to book a ticket for the train without physically going to a train station in China. This is the reply I got:

Dear Sir/Madam,
We are regret to inform you that international trains do not accept booking for tickets between Jul 20 and Sep 30.
Passengers can only purchase the tickets at railway station.

So, should I book a flight out of Ulan Bator and just assume that I can get on the train? It worries me because lonely planet says that it's difficult to tickets during peak season. What do you think I should do?

I caught the Beijing UB train last year. They have a tiered sytem. 2,4,6 berth. I opted for 4 berth for $100US. I think 6 berth was around $80 & 2 berth was $150.

Bill Wang in Chongwengmen will book tickets for you, & you can collect & pay when you arrive in Beijing.

I wouldn't spend more than a day or 2 in UB anyway, regardless of the riots. Go to Terelj NP, South Gobi, & Hovsgol, asap. Stock up on snacks at the State Dept Store. OTAM were great.

They currently have a 'worm' in their website, according to my virus detector.
