|
|
Since March I've had the same afterschool class five days a week. Each class is 40 minutes. Anyone else doing this?
Just seems strange to me because everyone else I've heard of doing afterschool classes has the same class 3 times a week. Or twice a week.
And it's not just one, it's two. Back to back 40 m each 10 m break between. First is 3,4 grade. Second is 5,6 grade.
Four months now.
Attendance started out at 28 students. Now it's 21. This number is the total when the two daily classes student numbers are added together.
If the total attendance goes below 20 then the class is cancelled.
The class has never been advertised via flyers or anything like that.
Personally I don't care much if the classes are cancelled or not. Sure, it's good money. Sure, I don't mind the days when there are a total of seven classes a day (five reg pub school 40 m, then the two 40m special afterschool classes) and that's a long day. But it's good money, working the special classes. Adds up at the end of the month.
I don't care obsessively, that is. My Kcoteacher worries, though, that the class will be cancelled. To her this seems to be some kind of indicator whether I'm a good teacher or not. A kind of mind game going on here.
I don't know anyone doing the same afterschool class five days a week. And when I was in hagwons the tendency was that, after a term (three months or so), the kids surf around to another hagown for the sake of novelty. Turnover was a natural situation. I never worried about it. New kids came in to replace them.
Kcoteacher has never worked in a hagwon and is used to students just being there, never quitting, as is the case in public school.
I'm amazed so many of the same kids are still in the class after four months of M-F. Kcoteacher is amazed that enrollment has gone from 28 - 21 over four months.
I do a good job and keep it fast paced and lively. About a third of the 3,4 level kids aren't big talkers but I can see that, when I meet them in regular elem classes, they speak up because they CAN now, from their experience in the afterschool class daily.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Anyone teaching the same afterschool class M-F for an extended period?
An advertising flyer went out a couple of days ago. This was the first time the afterschool English class has been advertised. Hopefully it'll pull some new students in. |

Monday I have the year 5s - about 12 students for (officially) 2 hours but in actuality only 1 hr 25 mins.
Tuesday I have 5s & 6s but only 1 year 6 bothers coming & half the year 5s so about 7 students on average for that one for (officially) an hour but in actuality only 40 mins.
Friday it's year 6....all 4 of them for (officially) 2 hours but really only 1 hr 25 mins.
I get paid 30,000 an hour for 5 hours a week for this which is kinda cool. I have to say though I love the smaller classes, you can just get so much done with them! So though the classes are small I feel like we're acheiving a lot. |

Spliff. The above quote is from my original post up top which started the thread. It clearly idicates that yes, obviously I'm getting paid for afterschool classes. You read right by it. Which means your reading comprehension is inadequate and your comment is moot.
Either that or you're deliberately being offensive trying to suggest that I'm stupidly working for nothing. Probably the latter. Which means Spliff = troll. But the Job Disc forum? For shame!!!!!!! Have you no scruples or moral compass? Do you need guidance and supervision? Have you shaved recently and are you getting adequate nutrition, rest, moral support? Do you know where you're going in life?
It's ok to troll on the Offtopic or General Discussion boards, IMO. But not ok to troll on the Job Discussion boards. However if you really feel compelled to troll on the Job Discussion board it would be humorous if your contribution was truly funny. It would provide some welcome levity to the mundane discussions of work related issues and would make you appear to be less of a marbles fanatic. I know, you LIKE marbles. That's ok, I didn't mean to suggest that can't be an adult pastime. But off the Job Discussion board in an appropriate, designated play area away from traffic, sexual predators, and while wearing clear goggles with shatterproof plastic lenses.
Thank you, and happy trolling. Love MOM. |

I refused to do any afterschool classes even though they offered W40,000/45-minute class; and the first 20 minutes would be during time I'm at school anyway (16:10-16:30).
I teach 23 classes/week (one 'extra', so I can see all my classes once a week). That's enough fo me! |
