I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this already.
A South Korean tourist was shot dead in Keumgangsan, North Korea, as she tried to cross into a prohibited area on a tourist trip. She was shot dead at 4.30am. I wonder what exactly she was doing?
Does anyone have any more information about this? |

I'm not surprised.
South Koreans are always going to places where they shouldn't.
Remember the kidnapped missionaries in Afghanistan?
She got what she deserved. The NK guard was doing his job enforcing the rules when he saw a SK tourist going on her own adventure hike at 4:30 am.
That's another thing about SK people. They don't follow rules. |

I know the NK guard was just doing his job, but to say she got what she deserved is harsh. In the article it said the guard told her to come back, so he gave her a chance to get back out of the restricted area. She didn't listen and he shot her. But you are so right about South Koreans breaking rules. A few years ago when I was in Guam, the guy who worked at the scuba shop at the Hitlon Hotel told me that it was always the Korean tourists causing all of the trouble in the surrounding hotels, as well as the Hilton. He said every time they had to go and get someone swimming past the buoys, it was always a Korean. He said one time a Korean lady was screaming that she was drowning and she was wearing a life jacket. He said every time police had to be called to come to the Hilton and the surrounding hotels, it was always a Korean causing trouble...beating up his wife or girlfriend in the room, starting trouble with other people, etc. The Hilton had an outdoor jacuzzi by the pool, and this guy told me that one time, a white guy got into the jacuzzi, said hello to a Korean man's wife/girlfriend, he got jealous and splashed him. A fight started, police were called, and the Korean man was crying and scared...  |

The killing will be an expensive lesson to South Koreans.
What I am thinking is "What on earth was going through that woman's head at the time? Did she think she was at Disney Land? The two countries are still at war."
I think the tour company she was with may bear a bit of responsibility. It's up to them to repeatedly warn the tourists not to wander off the tourist site.

I've been on this tour, and you're repeatedly warned not to wander off the tourist site. The sight of North Koreans with guns everywhere is also just a small reminder, as is the fence that demarcates the tourist area.
I really want to know exactly where she was and what she was doing, whether it was premeditated or foolish misadventure, and whether she defied the guard, couldn't understand him or was too scared to move. I guess all of this will come out in the investigation. |

There will be no investigation. The North is not allowing it.
And how do we know that the woman was not grabbed and some guards attempted to rape her as she went out alone for a morning run? Maybe she tried to escape them raping her? How will we know? |

(north) korea IS disneyland. the south is more interesting, though. it has a lot more (esl) clowns running around. |
