Here is a story about how the prez. of UEFA says South Africa is a dump and the World Cup might be moved...possibly to England. Let's translate his quote.

Quote:
The World Cup preparations have been plagued by stadium construction delays, security fears, transport problems and the possibility of power outages.

Plagued = poor management
Stadium delays = lazy locals
Security fears = locals would kill you for 50 cents
Transport problems = scary taxis and crazy drivers on the road
Power outages = no power for hours and hours everyday (so you have crazy drivers and no traffic lights)

I've been to South Africa. Not for a moment did I think S.A. could pull this event off. Now Sepp Blatter is saying the same thing. Here's the article:

You obviously weren't there for the rugby and cricket world cup's which both ran seamlessly.

Granted, the Soccer World Cup is a bigger fish and there are definite problems in getting the infrastructure up to scratch, but I think it will be done - there are still 2 years before kick off and if I recall the paint wasn't even dry in Athens when the Olympics began a few years ago.

Regarding the issue of safety (crime), well it is a problem, a HUGE one at that...but it hasn't gotten worse since the World cup was awarded to SA (may have even improved), and the FIFA bigwigs were well aware of that situation when they made their decision, so to change their minds because of that isn't going to happen (however irresponsible it is to send thousands of football fans to the slaughter).

Unfortunatly for all involved, Soccer is a global game, with Africa playing its part, Sepp Blatter got elected in part on his promise to bring the world cup to Africa and his policy to share the world cup's amongst the continents and out of the deck of cards which is Africa, South Africa is the Ace of Spades.

A lot of whites have emigrated out of the country since then.
As it stands now you may as well award it to be hosted by the warlords of Somalia.

I think it would be better back in Europe. Israel seems a good choice. Safer than SA.

At the time the event was announced, it was (if memory serves) widely reported that Australia was the backup. Oz has the infrastructure from the recent Olympics.

Only problem here is the story id dated July 20.

Unless it's a paper from the future the story is from 07 if not 06.

It's NOT an issue now. Start looking for hotels in SA.

(SA were in WC 02)

Great idea. They could use a human head for the ball.

That was for Greece, right?

Many Canadians don't realize but the Montreal Expo 67 was actually supposed to be the Moscow Expo but the commies couldn't get it together and expo passed to Montreal.

What Brits would give to swap the World Cup for the Olympics. Give SA the Olympics, that'd make more sense.

As everyone knows (most are too polite to say so), South Africa is a shithole.

Small wonder that every third ESL job posting one reads only posts six nations from which they might choose their next teacher.

Ireland makes the cut, for Pete's sake! (No offense to the Irish, though the accent is rather strong.)

You hear me there, bovineretard?

It says at the top of the article:

Updated: July 9, 2008, 7:13 PM ET

The article also talks about the transfer of Ronaldo to Spain. That is not 2006 or 2007, buddy. Don't try and spin this. S.A. is going to lose this cup...sorry.

The opportunity to hire the refs would be a big boost to England's chances.
