|
|
I'm coming a month early before the SMOE orientation and I was wondering if I could hook up with them and get my ARC, have the drug tests and get set up with health insurance before I start the orientation. I doubt I could get the insurance set up because I am not being paid, but it's worth a try inquiring. |

If ur period of employment has begun than u could get both right away. I'm not too sure about the wording of ur equerry, though...a little fuzzy. |

No, I wouldn't be starting employment yet. I figured I could do it before I work because I won't be doing too much during the day. |

The medical is not covered by insurance so you would have to pay the 50-150k (depending on where you go) for your medical. Then you could, if you knew which school you were going to, get the necessary paperwork for your ARC.
Problem is that most people have no idea where they will be working until they get assigned at the orientation. If you have your medical done you can get your ARC the week after you get to your school.
You CAN open a bank account with only your passport.

I'm a little confused on this based on what you said ttompatz. So who is sponsoring the visa that allows you to get your ARC (SMOE or the school that you are appointed to)? Is the ARC tied directly to the hiring agency or to the school that is employing you? |

A little bit of both.... Your school is employing you under the umbrella of the office of education. They have their own rule book when in comes to immigration policy.
SMOE is the invitee and the school becomes your sponsor but you and the school are under the direction and direct responsibility of the OE. such are the joys of being a government employee.
You need the paperwork from the specific school (like the school's registration) to get your ARC so even though you are under the auspices of the SMOE and working under ETIS you still need documents from your specific school to get your ARC.

Ahh good point. I guess since I don't know where I am being placed I can't talk to the school. I do, however, have a bank account open with 8,000 won from last year, so that's all set. |

Im starting SMOE in 15 days and I was wondering if they administer it to you or if you have to have it done within a certain time frame?

i believe you have 90 days to get your ARC (which you need the drug test for), however i'd get it asap because you'll need your ARC to get your health insurance |

The drug test that you are talking about is only one part of the Health check that you have to do within 90 days of being here. It needs to be done by one of the approved hospitals.
You need to have the health check done within 90 days and before you can apply for and get your ARC. (ie you need to get your ARC within your first 90 days of arriving AND the medical test results including the drug test must be included with your ARC application) |

Last March, SMOE told all the new teachers to go to a specific clinic and get the medical and health check done right after orientation. Many people were angry, especially kyopos on an F-4 visa who didn't need the tests, but still shelled out 60,000 won or so. I'm guessing some people were hesitant because they may have toked up before coming here while in another country. No one signed an agreement to have it done earlier, but SMOE told them to so they followed suit.
If you are a new SMOE teacher, unless you signed something special, you have 90 days to submit your tests and get your ARC. SMOE is not immigration. They can not tell you where or when to get your medical tests done. |
