So I'm leaving Korea in a week and I have a box that I need to ship home. It's 20kg, and I've looked at both express and surface mail...has anyone had any experience with the surface, slower mail? I know it takes maybe 2-3 months to get it to the States, but is it reliable? Or will I have trouble with the container getting wet, opened, etc? I'm just wondering which method is best?

I had 6 boxes of stuff shipped from Korea to California before I left in December. Everything I shipped arrived exactly how I taped it up, no problems at all. It did take about a month or so to receive the boxes. The boxes were all sent via the normal surface post office route. Off topic a bit, the funny thing is the boxes are still unopened and sitting in my room, while I am getting ready to return to Korea with my wife for a second contract. I can't imagine what we sent home that we have not actually needed since we have not touched the boxes. We know this time around to pack a lot less crap.

So you shipped your stuff by boat or by express mail? I guess my area of worry is because what I'm sending is mainly books and a few small electronic things...the thought of water damage worries me.

I shipped 3 boxes and only 2 made it home. Luckily it was not sentimental or expensive stuff, but it had teaching materials and work clothes in it. The other 2 boxes which included a laptop and other nice things did make it.

The one that didn't make it was sent from a small dong post office during a lunch break on one of my last days, while I sent the other 2 from the main downtown post office in Changwon on my last day.

If you offer the woman at the post office a small gratuity she will make a little mark in the upper right corner of the box. This will ensure that the box is put below deck away from the rain and waves. Be sure to get the anti-pirate and sea monster insurance, just in case.

I shipped stuff by boat. I only sent clothes, books, and other random stuff, no electronics. I did not experience any water damage, but I am sure each situation is unique. Good luck.
