Not just Canadians, but also South Africans and other English speaking countries where jobs aren't exactly in abundance and the economy sucks. I am meeting tons and tons of Canadians though.
There are not too many Americans or British here. But with the way the economy is going that will probably change.
Koreans often ask me if I am Canadian. When I tell Koreans that I am from America, lots of the time they look at me and ask in surprise and ask, "Why would you leave America and come here?" As if I left a great place and came to an awful place. I am starting to agree more and more with each week that passes.
Where I come from, they call Canada "Mexico North". Snowmexicans is a good one too. It's all for fun though, I got nothing against them. |
I love it when people don't know their facts. The British economy has been in decline for a long long time. The standard of living is now quite noticeably lower than that of mainland Western and Northern Europe. I find it ironic that Ireland's economy is doing great.
As for Canada. There's never been more jobs for recent graduates. There's also never been so many homes in the South (ie.. Ammuricuh) that Canadians have been able to buy for some cheap prices. You might want to research some facts about what economy is doing what, might burst your bubble. |
I havn't met many Brits here at all. And yeah, Britain's economy is in decline, but across the board, almost every western countries economy is in decline. It's a matter of severity.
Still though. It seems to me that it is easier to make it in Britain than Canada. For various reasons. |

I didn't realize Strange Brew was the name of that movie. I'd seen bits of it, but never from beginning to end. Yea... funny.

aboot? These two losers are what we think of dumb Canadians, not Newfies. Aboot comes from the Irish accent in Newfoundland (really wonderful place...provided you aren't a fisherman who lost his job due to over fishing). Bob and Doug took the word "eh" to the extreme and showed Canadians love of beer and toques. Even Newfoundlanders don't really say aboot. Americans are the only humans on the planet that I know of that really say aboot....when they attempt to profess that there is a Canadian accent. Most of us just sound just like educated Americans.....or perhaps like this....those strange southerners

There is a good reason why you don't see too many Brits teaching in Korea; it's because most of them can work in Europe with ease. They are also paid in Euros which has been mostly increasing in value, not like the Korean won.
I have no contention about "Snowmexicans" though I find it an odd term. Many Americans live in weather much like most Canadians. Canadians generally learn French as a second language whereas Americans generally learn Spanish which is the language of Mexico. There are also many more English speaking Americans that eat mexican food.
Maybe Zeus can explain what he means by this term.
Bob and Doug did a good job at making fun about how some Canadians are. Brits and Canadians can take some pride in themselves that we are able to laugh at ourselves.
At least I can have a laugh at that photo and also when I look at Bush. The former is an act, and the sad truth is the latter is one that is regrettably a reality that holds an office of power. Bob and Doug were never elected and Bush was twice. |

Of course they would. Think about how much movie stuff people pick up and how much makes it into mainstream society. Some of it can be funny, though usually not. Guess they should have redubbed the movie for DVD release to show people proper Canadian.  |

This is not an "Alriiiighty then!!" or "Yeah, Baby!!", to quote two other Canadians. No Canadian said "eh" or "aboot" until this movie came out? They just made up their own way of how Canadians are thought to speak?  |

I didn't say or mean to imply that. I was just saying that many times people use what they hear in movies. You even said millions of ignorant Canadians decided to copy it. You would have to use "Yeah, Baby", I still cringe when thinking of people using that one a few years back! Not the first time that was used either (hopefully that one can be retired) . |
