On the class schedule, every Korean teacher is listed by their first initial, this even includes teachers who have been at the school less time than I have. I am not listed by my initial but as "waygookin." This schedule is in the teacher's room and isn't something the kids see.

If you ask me, the reason this happens is that the other teachers make half of what I do and this is an easy way to assert some kind of superiority.

It bothers the hell out of me.

i can accept that.

but what would be the reasonable explanation for this? it is just as easy to list me the same way but there is a conscious decision not to. i dont think i am wrong about this.

Maybe your initial is the same as one of the teachers, so to easily differentiate you it easier to put up 외.

Let's face it we're out of the loop. Unless you speak Korean and mingle. The Kcoworkers share the same culture, values, etc. They share the stand-offish attitude towards foreigners. It's bound to come out in little, symbolic things like referring to the 'waegookin' on the schedule. And not with a name, as would be more friendly.

My Kcoteacher refers to me, when speaking to other Kteachers, as the wanamin, 'native speaker'. Even though I'm right there five feet away they're talking about me using not my name but my role. I guess that's kinda professional but it's also stand-offish. It may be she doesn't want to say a foreign name, which my name is. And 'wanamin' is Korean.

It's farked up but what can you do? You're an outsider. I'm an outsider. If you're a foreigner you're an outsider. Kinda bleak for us. No bother to them. NO BOTHER TO THEM. They have their homeland, family, tightly knit co-worker group. Good thing to remember so as to stay cool about it. THEY are connected and comfortable.

When speaking in your presence, Koreans will tend to avoid using names.

OP,

I think you should continue to get angry about it. That seems to be working for you.

Yes.

I am listed at my optometrist as WAYGUGIN!

WTF

I gave him my card last time and pointed out my name. ( which is in Korean too)

He didn't change his computer record file.

There is a lot more to care about in this world than yourself written as 'waegukin' on the time schedule. Go have a beer.

Then take a felt tip pen, cross out 외국인, and write in your initials. you get what you want, and you send a message at the same time. But it's not anything to go apeshit over.

We are teachers, not "waygookin" and have every right to be respected as such. We were invited and not conscripted. We teach out language, culture and indirectly, our value system. That includes respecting individuals. Koreans are racist and the best lesson you can teach them is how not be this way. As suggested above, erase "waygookin" and replace it with your initials. If they change it back or do it again, you should erase it and do the same thing agan.

Either that or cross out their initials and write "한국인" Twisted Evil
You won't be popular if you do this, but if you want to make your point...

yes, indeed.

the decision was concious and completely premeditated.

last year i wrote a book for my elementary school. i didnt ask for anything for it - it was a gift of my time as i liked the school and the students. i wrote about 70 percent of the content and some koreans did the translations and added a few things here and there in korean.

the credits?

i was listed last of about 7 people, even though only 3 had anything to do with the book.

the korean names were writted in their entirity, ie, the three characters. and mine? they only wrote my middle name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wtf!!

only my middle name followed by weigookin!!!

i asked them if they knew my whole name and they all did.

i asked them how they would feel if only their middle names were listed. they said Shocked Shocked that would be terrible!!

ahh...weeelll...ahh... Rolling Eyes

i let them know how i felt about it - not necessarily because they onlyu listed my middle name, but because they all knew my whole name and they said it would be mortified if only their middle names were listed...

honestly, i just CANNOT UNDERSTAND the korean thinking sometimes...

i am resonably happy with my situation here, but sometimes i call korea the "wtf country" i have said to myself "WTF" more times in the last 15 months (my stay in korea) than i have the last 30 years.

i know how you feel. deal with it as you see fit...
