I was wondering for the purpose of salary range, what is "one year teaching experience" considered for the public schools? I am talking about SMOE and the other two districts that are in Korea. The private school teachers and other people that fill in for teachers in America have similar responsibilities as certified teachers. If anyone could help me with this topic it would be very much appreciated.

1 year of full time, documented classroom experience. distance teaching and home tutoring is not considered classroom experience.

If you have a letter from an employer (employment certificate) that indicates your years of classroom experience, as a teacher, you get it.

Oh, and there may be 3 programs (EPIK, GEPIK, SMOE/ETIS) for the hiring of foreign staff but there are about 15 POEs (provincial offices and special cities offices of education) and 7000 school districts.

You should at least get your terminology straight unless there are only 50 school districts in your country.

I was wondering does this also cover substitute teachers?B ecause that position is considered classroom experience. Does this put me on the level of pay when it states teaching experience? Is this up to the recruiter or up to the public school district?

The usual ambiguity found in Korea.

Through my experiences in Korea, I have come to believe that a year's experience of teaching is one academic year or 32 weeks for two semesters (probably full-time) worth of teaching experience. I doubt that anyone will scrutinize the number of classes per week or the number of contact hours (one fifty minute class = 1*(50/60) = 0.83 contact hours) that a particular candidate has.

Criteria used my many other countries seems irrelevant in Korea, while formality (thanks to the important of ritual in Confucianism) seems to superceed everything else (i.e. paperwork documenting one year).

Don't forget to request a Certificate of Employment as is your right according to the Labor Law (http://www.ilo.org/dyn/natlex/docs/WEBTEXT/46401/65062/E97KOR01.htm; Article 38). Feel free to mention the criteria as listed on this certificate, which consists of the following:

I taught in Japan for almost 4 years. I got a letter of reference and it only moved me up one year worth of pay (100,000 won). This is with GEPIK.

I presented a letter showing 1.5 years of teaching at an ECC. It was good then. Then the following year, my coteacher came back to me for some reason (I don't remember what) and asked if I could document some OTHER teaching experience to show I had at least 1 year. I told them that I had already done that, and the coteacher said, "the regulation has beem changed. That doesnt count any more." I dont remember what it was for, but there was no adverse reaction for me....i think. Anyways, that happened a year ago, and probably an ignorant coteacher spouting bullshit.

When I applied for SMOE I had 4 years of ESL experience at 3 different schools. I gave them letters that said things like "from July 2000 to June 2001" They didn't accept them. They said they wanted EXACT dates. So I had to deal with tracking down emplyers in 3 different countries trying to get letters that said "From July 1st 2000 to June 30th 2001". So picky.

Also SMOE does not want to give me the letters back, they said that they need to keep them. After I made a bit fuss about it they said that I can get them back but I need to take unofficial leave from school to do so.
