In Boryung over the weekend my buddy and I were strolling around
the centre/main-stage area drinking beer, gawking and generally having
a good time. We stopped to put on mud. I took my sunglasses ($200
Ray bans) off to put on some mud. A couple was next to us doing the
same. He was a hippie type and she was really granola. The next thing
I know my shades were gone! We looked all around the area, but they
were nowhere. Then we thought of the hippie couple (who we even
talked to and said hello) We looked around and spotted them
walking off. They were about 20m away, so we started to close the
distance between ourselves and the alleged perps. We got within 2
meters and sure enough my shades were on her head! I walked up to
her and stood nose-to-nose with granola and said: "Nice shades". She
knew the jig was up so she said: "Yes, I took your shades." She said
this like it was a "duh, of course I did" sort of way. Then handed them
over. Her boyfriend said something like, "haha they sure do look like
mine, what a mistake." Yeah right! Its a good thing for him I'm basically
a pacifist.

Anyway, aren't university educated people supposed to be honest? These
two scumbags really soured me. Most Koreans would probably put the
sunglasses on a ledge so I could find them when I came looking. Or they
would give them to a festival worker or the police. What has happened to
western society?

Apart from the hippie scum the festival was great. Free camping, BBQ,
good weather.

You can't be serious. A college education doesn't equal honesty. I am sure some high school dropouts are more honest than some PhD holders. Just look at some politicians and businessmen. Also, there are honest and dishonest people in every race, social class, and education level. A Korean could steal something just as quickly as anyone else.

That's why I buy the $8 knockoffs. I save $192 and granola hippie scum cost me less when they steal my shit. I bet the couple had an American/Canadian accent. Now am I right or am I right?

I'd definitely agree with you here. I've had and seen many situations where Koreans went out of their way to return something left behind at stores, in public, etc. Pretty ballsy how unapologetic she was about it. I'm not a big violence guy, but I think someone deserved to be tossed around after being so remorseless about commiting a crime.

You're lucky you spotted those two. Those are some big balls.
I have experienced Korean honesty many times. I left my Mcdonalds lunch in the back of a taxi one time. Got out, started walking, completely forgot about it. Several minutes later a taxi cuts in front of me, guy hands me my lunch, smiles, waves and drives away.
Another time in my city, I leaned my bicycle (Cannondale messenger) and groceries against a wall to stop in a say hello to a friend having drinks. I didn't lock it because we sat in the window and I could see it. One pitcher led to three, and one bar led to four more, and the next thing I knew, the sun was coming up and it was time to go home. Forgot my bike. Three days later I remembered where I had left it. It was still there. The groceries had spoiled, but they were there too.

"All __________ are ____________.",

is a loaded gun.

Be it a positive or negative assertion.

But hippies are often not very cool.

I hate hippies.

1. Wash your hair. Just putting more and more grease in it doesn't keep it clean.

2. Use soap everyday. Yes, everyday means everyday.

3. Stale marijuana smoke is not perfume/cologne.

4. A real job is not selling griled cheese sandwiches at Phish concerts.

Also, you can never trust hippies either. It is no coincidence that when a couple hippies show up, people guard their bags and valuables closely. If something goes missing, you ALWAYS suspect the hippies first. Why? See number 4.

They have to get their recreational drug money somewhere.

You took off your expensive sunglasses and left them unattended. This is safe nowhere in the world.

Yeah, I know, but they were RIGHT next to me and I didn't have them
off for more than a minute. This scumbag chick just scooped them off
this table and in the same motion put them on her head and started
walking away.

They were lucky I was drinking beer and not getting smashed on bourbon
or scotch. (maybe I was lucky I wasn't, haha)

Ya shoulda punched her. And don't y'all go and try to tell me hitting women is wrong. Western women want equality there it is. Had it been a guy he'd have gotten hit, she can get the same.

I used to think the same, but having a $100 pair was worth it. Those cheapos don't protect your eyes from UV at all. I bought a $100 pair four years ago and still going....worth if it you ask me

In terms of theft, I think it happens more in America than in Korea, no doubt about that. "Honesty" is a different question.

Well-rounded environmentalists are cool but hippies piss me right the *beep* off. Especially the Kerouac readin', hemp wearin', idealogical, pot-smokin', job lackin' ones. They want everyone to listen to them but their ideas are stupid and they're just following some fad, like anyone would naturally gravitate to all that stuff if they weren't influenced by someone else.

Self-righteous hippies are the worst kind of hippies. It's like being a proud employee of McDonald's. "Che Guevara would think you're a pu.ssy, so why the hell do you love him so much?"
