Korea has a fair number of tourists annually, as seen in the rankings compiled the World Tourism Organization.

At number 35 with 6.2 million visitors per year, Korea is only 4 spots behind Japan and has about half as many tourists as the much-touted Thailand. Regardless of what you believe, Korea is a popular tourist destination (well within the top 50). How many of the tourists are Westerners? My guess is about 10%, but I don't think that's a much lower percentage than in Japan.
Why some people make claims without knowing any facts bewilders me, but such is the nature of Internet message boards. |
More than Australia, go figure. |

It'd be interesting to see the figures for the number of Koreans that were international tourists themselves.
I would have thought Australia higher up the list and Canada lower. Maybe that's just an Irishmans' perspective. Is Canada a popular spot for North Americans to go to?
Wow, Ireland had 8 million tourists and our population is only around 4 million.
11.2 million for Crotia! WTF? |

Korea is the only convenient, close place to go for countless millions of Chinese and Japanese. It would have a reasonable tourist industry even if were mainly a soulless collection of pastel coloured shoe-boxes with millions of wires slung inbetween and had no wildlife.
Hey, wait a minute.....
(the 10% of western tourists are probably all mom and dad visiting little Brad who is unhappy at his Hagwon) |

| I hear a lot of Mandarin and Japanese when I'm out in areas like Myeongdong, Namdaemun, or any of the tourist attractions like the palaces. There are big, BIG tour groups that hit up those places. |

I think that because they are mainly like that, you do seldom see tourists. The Chinese and Japanese are not creative travellers, they don't get off the tourist track much.
If I was in charge of tourism, I would bulldoze Gyongju city center and build somewhere with ye olde charm, force all residents there to wear hanboks, blindfold all tourists and bus them down there for a week. |

In Suwon I only see tourists at Hwaseong, but there are some obvious out-of-towners and a few Westerners. In Seoul there are many more. Every time I go to Seoul I see western tourists. Every time. You can tell they're tourists because only Joe-Bob Cletus walks around Sinchon in a Hawaiian shirt with his $600 camera hanging from a lanyard while his fat wife complains that nobody has her size. That's the kind of American cow the locals should be upset about.
But I agree there's not much to do in Korea that would attract tourists. I mean, it's cheaper than Japan, but so is Thailand. |
