Too much like the freaky waygook thread or the masses are asses idea. Everybody but self is included in who sucks. Tired of this crap really. We all suck. So shut up with this garbage.
Nah, I only suck on occasion. Unlike some of you awesome people who are just like always fantastic people, great teachers, blah blah, who apparently are among the 99% of great cool people on Daves. |
i dont know who you are but thank you so much for posting this...
very acute observation. the saying: "familiarity breeds contempt" sounds so cliched, but is one of the most veracious truisms known to man.
honestly, sometimes when i read some threads here i feel a little shy to meet many foreigners here because they seem so fucking perfect in every way and christ forbid my errable little self be exposed!! |

god, i can't stand seeing other white, foreigners walking around here
anytime i see one, i make a point to initiate contact
it usually begins with a good swift kick in the scrotal region, & then i say
(but this can vary) "you dipshit, what the hell are you doing in this
country?" i get a few quick shots into the gut and rib-cage region
dumb-ass, white-ass foreigner (yes, i'm white and foreign too) what the
hell are you doing moving in on my territory?! bitch! then a few more
shots to the gut. that usually learns 'em not to look at me too closely,
or give me that little lame head-nod of recognition |

Altering your activities will certainly lead to more recreational enjoyment. You must "let it out". |

i think it bloody rude not to say hello. why in a foreign country do you feel the need not to be civil and friendly, have you left behind all your values and gone native after you started dating that korean?
with white skin you stand out like a sore thumb, you are from a similar background, you deal with similar experiences and do a similar job- swallow your pride and get that chip off your shoulder, otherwise it will come back to bite you- ie. some guy ignoring me several times until he joined my gym and felt awkward meeting me after i mentioned it to him.
just remember that person looking at you while you pull your phone or whatever out because you think your too good to say hello may well be like you were, a newbie in the country alone who could do with a little civil friendliness.
granted iv met some nice people and some absolute assholes, but random billy on the street doesnt pose a threat |

Not where I live.
I see a few dozen White people per day... and just because our skin has a similar hue, does NOT mean we need to talk. |

I hate the foreigners who ignore you when they see you coming. Always the same - they see you coming and they whip out their phone to avoid making eye contact. A friendly smile and nod won't hurt, will it? |
Yeah. There is this guy who I always see near my school. When I first started my job, I was walking up the street to the school and I saw him coming. "Hey, how's it going," I said. Dude just looked at me blankly like he was having trouble solving 1 + 1.
Still see him from time to time. Now he just walks right through me (kind of like an adjumma who is on the wrong side of the walking path yet expects you to yield to her.) I agree with you. I hate people like that. |
Yeah! What is it with expats on the ROK that act like that? Is this some form of anti-tourist thing? I've been to four dozen countries yet until Korea, had never experienced the anti-social waegook before. |

I have also lived abroad in several other countries and the people in Seoul are by far the most unfriendly to other ex-pats I've met.
However - I think another true reason might be...
A lot of the ex-pats here aren't the most socially adept folk on the planet. Could it perhaps be that they're so socially awkward they can't contrive the correct response. Looking at some of these people... I wouldn't be surprised if they froze up upon contact. So don't hate 'em. Pity them.
I still say hello to people. It doesn't hurt my feelings if they don't reply. I've done the polite thing. |

I just wave and laugh nowadays. I don't actually expect any response from the odd dysfunctional waeguk behind the sunglasses. |

There are some anti-social, maladjusted freaks here, to be sure. But you rarely meet them since they're quite anti-social. The typical ex-pat you meet at the local foreigner bar tends to be a right fine lad. |
