According to the Immigration regulations, the medical check can be done at a government hospital (국립병원 or 공립병연) or a general hospital (종합병원). The following are the relevant sections of the E-2 regulations in Korean and English, taken from the Immigration Guide on the HiKorea website (http://www.hikorea.go.kr):
Korean:
Quote: |
English:
Quote: |
- Submit health examination records upon applying to be a registered foreigner after entering Korea.
※ Recruitment health exam MUST include TBPE test(tests for drug abuse) and HIV test (tests for AIDS) results(cannabinoid test for Marijuana need not to be included) |
I'd suggest printing them out (especially the Korean) and taking them with you so the hospital will give you what you need. |

I paid W35,000 each for the health tests and drug tests.
Total of W70,000.
This was out in the country so in bigger places who knows.

Mine was about 57,000 out in a country hospital as well. Took less than an hour - weight, height, blood pressure, hearing test, chest X-ray, blood draw and urine sample.
It would have taken longer because they wanted me to talk to the doc- my blood pressure was on the high side - but I couldn't stay for the chat because I had to go to work! |

My husband called Immigration 3 separate times and he was told that if I was invited by GEPIK (ie. there is a stamp on your passport or you have an accepted letter of notice by GEPIK) that I only need to get the AIDS test and the drug test to extend my visa. My husband called immigration 3 x's and spoke with 3 different people and got the same answer each time. If this true it could save GEPIK renewers some time and money. (I'll post once I find out for sure)
Drug test cost 15,000 and the medical is supposed to be 60,000 won. |

We were told the same, that they only require the drug tests.
But your school can require the health check seperate to immigration.
Plus, a basic health check for $30 or so, bargain. Worth the money just for peace of mind.

Yeah, I'm 100% sure and was told by Gepik office that i was "I was invited by GEPIK" but how do u show that? What stamp in my passport, and the letter I'm pretty sure I gave to the consulate when getting my first visa...have to have a look around my paperwork at home to see if I got a copy. But I doubt it. |

※ Nationals of countries that have not signed the Apostille treaty, (Canada, China, etc) must get their records verified by their local Korean consulate or their consulates in Korea, and those already in Korea who were issued their criminal records from their consulates in Korea have no need for an Apostille
※ Exempt : Native instructors invited by the Ministry of Education |

Good, but how does one determine if one fits :"Native instructors invited by the Ministry of Education"? Sure would like to know....is there a BAT ray w/ a big "G" instead of "B"... |

If you work for a public school, you fall under that category. It's clearer in the Korean than in the English (surprise, surprise). |
ONLY if you were hired with a letter of invitation from the POE.
IF you were hired with a visa confirmation number through the local education office or directly by the school you get to perform all the tricks as you jump through the hoops.
See Ttompatz.
See Ttompatz jump through the hoops.
See Ttompatz jump through all the hoops again for the umpteeth time in 1/2 as many years.
See Ttompatz say enough is enough as he suggests that they go hire some more 2nd years students to replace him and he will head for the beach until he is old enough to retire.
(1 more experienced teacher bites the dust - Korean's immigration service and education offices at their finest).

ttompatz, oops, you're right. The Korean text says that teachers hired directly by the principal don't count. |
