I'm not an expert on this Dokdo business, and I didn't major in international relations.

But I can't understand why they don't just figure out a civilized way to settle this dispute. How difficult can it be?

The simplest solution is to just divide the damm islands down the middle.

Or, how about just flipping a coin?

What do you think?

I don't think it's necessarily the island but more the geographical landmark. From what I know Dodko is about the size of a penny coin. Also, there is supposed to be an abudance of fish located in the area. Nonetheless its stirred the old emotions, and therefore it should end the 'mad cow' debacle. Well here's hoping!! That much is obvious- a ploy by Lee mong bak to divert attention away from the beef and make him appear brave for standing up to the Japanese.

This is what I told my supervisor, who refused to accept it. In her eyes the president is suddenly a hero of the korean people.
How naiive and easily manipulated are these people??????? Rolling Eyes

what would make anyone think the Ks are interested in settling the issue?

they are egging for a spat w/the Jpnse - just one they know can make sides fluff their feathers, puff their chests and stick out the rulers and say ok whose is longest???

IMO the best solution would be to make it international territory for infinity. or declare it an international bird sanctuary, something like that.

let there be peace. let it begin with Dokdo.

nah, ain't gonna happen, too easy. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Why can this not be fixed. You are talking rationality in an irrational world. Why do the Palestinians keep harping on about land they barely used 100 years ago. Why does Osama Bin Laden keeping bringing up the Crusades and Crusaders even through it has been over 600 years. Why do factions of the IRA always keep cropping up after they get what they want. It is because they are all irrational people with hatred.

Koreans keep on the Dokdo thing because they are still hurting over the Japanese Occupation. They hate the Japanese like a jilted ex-wife replaced with a 20 year old bimbo. And like that scorned woman they will hang on to this hatred until they die or a bigger hate on comes along. (Hmmm next auditioning for this role is ...... USA)

Also why this continues is WILL. Japanese have the will to complain make some protestations via government channels and such. But do they have the will to send a navy and take what they think is theirs. At the moment Koreans are showing will but it may come a time when they will have to stand up and possible show with bullets that these little rocks are worth fighting for.

My opinion the rocks should go to the one that is simply willing to fight for it. The one right now willing to go crazy enough to kill is the Korean so it is all theirs. It could be settled in an International court but that would not solve it. Both sides would still bicker over alimony.

I like the sharing idea. Odd years go to Korea, even years go to Japan. Or how about a monthly rotation. Or Mon-Thurs = Korea, Fri - Sunday = Japan. Or Mornings go...you get the idea.

It's not about being civil. It's about being RIGHT. It's about WINNING.

Would never happen because that would mean the Japanese have a legitimate claim to the island, something Korea would never admit. That's not winning.

That's true. Even the idea of taking it to an international court of arbitration is seen as traitorous in Korea--it's selling out and bowing to the Japanese again.

LMB didn't start this current kerfluffle but his last hope of remaining president depends on how he handles it. If he comes across as wimpy in the next few weeks, you can put a fork in him, because he will be done.

I would absolutely LOVE to see Japan send in its navy, capture the k-security forces there, and simply take the islets at gunpoint (much as Korea wrongfully did in the first place). Korea would be totally and utterly humiliated, but would and could do nothing about it (a few meaningless self-immolations notwithstanding). If Korea actually tried to retaliate, it'd get crushed plain and simple.

It's not like the US would help them. With bases in BOTH Korea and Japan, they can't help one over the other.

Difference is...Japan is not so stupid to care that much about a tiny rock.

Theres nothing there to protect.
Of course there are fish. There are fish everywhere in the ocean for pity's sake. Rolling Eyes
