|
|
MADRID (AFP) - Former England captain David Beckham claimed on Sunday that his ex-Real Madrid team-mate Zinedine Zidane is the best player of all time.
The 33-year-old Englishman told sports daily Marca that it had been a dream come true to play alongside Zidane for three years at Real.
"To train with Zidane for three years (2003-06) was a dream," confessed Beckham, who has been capped over 100 times by his country.
"For me he is the greatest player of all time."
Beckham, who is now playing for Los Angeles Galaxy, also believed that the best Spanish player at the moment is Barcelona's playmaker Xavi, who inspired Spain to the Euro 2008 title last month and was judged player of the tournament.
However, Beckham also thinks that goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who he knows from his time at Real, should be awarded world player of the year after several outstanding performances at the Euro.
Beckham also denied he wished to become an actor even though he is living in Hollywood but that he would like to return to Madrid - where he still has a house - one day and work with the youth side at Real. |

He doesn't need Beckhams endoresment for that. I think most true football (soccer) fans would agree. If you don't know who Zidane is then check out the movie, "Zidane" complete with a kicking soundtrack from
Mogwai. |

Zhidane was a machine by the end of his career. A professional, a goalscorer. He was a joy to watch.
The greatest? His name would spring to mind, although it would be one of many. |

A mildly mediocre, celebrity footballer has endorsed another footballer on a slow news day. Who cares what Beckham thinks?
As IG points out that's a big call. Zidane wasn't exactly all over the pitch and in the other positions not so hot. Sweatiest player possibly. But best? No. What really amounts to the best? A player who shone and took a basically mediocre team further than they really should have gone. Then you're talking Maradona 1986 World Cup (that was an incredible performance that carried, what was a mediocre team) Platini shone in the France team. Zidane did have a quality team around him.
At the end of the day even if Beckham went on file to say that I was the best player that he played with, which isn't out of the realms of possibility, I'd probably take it with a pinch of salt. |

I don't think anyone, Beckham included, is suggesting that the best player ever has to be a combination of all these positions. That's almost as ridiculous as suggesting that Joe Montana wasn't really the greatest qb ever because his pass rush wasn't so hot. Okay, I'm stretching it a little here but only to illustrate the point.
When people talk of the best player ever, they talk of the flair players and they generally talk of playmaking midfielders/ strikers. It's a little unfair on the defenders, goalies, workhorse midfielders etc but that's the way it is. |

Maradonna gets my vote for the greatest of all time.
The best player I ever actually saw play was Patrick Viera (circa 1997-2002). I'm not an Arsenal fan but despite how much the scum used to rave about Keane, Viera always totally dominated midfield. He should never have left.
But my favourite...
Marco Van Basten!!!!!! Best centre-forward ever. |

These are the names I remember ..Stoichkov, Romario,Zico, Lineker, Rossi. Baggio is remembered for missing a vital penalty. One or two Nigerians like Okocha, Amokachi.Pele was before my time and I haven't really seen clips of him.
Ultimately you have to go with Maradona. he was dynamite. |

Zidane is the best I've seen in my lifetime. My father often talked about the greats of his generation: Cruyff, Eusebio, George Best, Beckenbauer....to name a few. |

Has to be Maradonna.
Cryuff, Zidane, Platini, Best, Di Stefano, Charlton(bobby), Pele(and a whole host of other brazilians), baggio(not dino)...and a load of people I'm forgetting would have to be in the conversation....but Maradonna...
..say the 'hand of god' to almost anyone on this planet and they will know immediately what you are talking about...then you will both talk lovingly about the 'other goal' in that game, which is maybe the greatest of all time.
Personally I think the only really honest way to choose these things is to make a team. Here is my greatest of all time team..3-1-4-1-1 is the formation
Keeper....Packie Bonner^^
centre back: maldiniz
centre back: baresi
centre back: moore
holding midfielder: beckenbauer
left wing: rivelino
midfielder: Zico
midfielder: Best
right wing: Jairzinho
no 10:Maradonna
Striker: pele
